I myself an only 16 years old, and I had the hardest time remembering things for years. Then last year, my mom and I tried a new technique.
First of all, DON'T LET HIM WATCH TV/PLAY VIDEO GAMES FOR HOURS AND HOURS A DAY!!!! I don't know how much I can emphasize that. If you have to, restrict his TV/internet/video game time to maybe an hour a day. You will see results very soon after.
Also, Try helping him to eat better. Even if this means changing the diet of the whole family, don't you think it's worth it? Studies have shown that what a person eats highly impacts their memory.
Now, if you don't have the money to be getting the expensive, healthy food, try multi-vitimins. A good mix of calcium, vitimin D, and a multi-vitimin specially designed for teenagers/young adults, accompanied with a reduction on the intake of sugar and soda, will make a HUGE difference. The vitimins aren't even that expensive. If your child doesn't like the vitimins (I wouldn't blame him), then reward him with something for taking them.
You could also tell him that if he raises his grades, you'll give him $5 for every A. Sure, that may be bribery, but it gets the job done.
I hope this helps! Good luck :)

When I first read your question, I immediatly thought about learning style. Not all children (and adults) learn in traditional ways. Students are often expected to memorize information and regurgitate it. This isn't really learning. There are three basic learning styles: Visual Learners - they need to see it/read it/see a picture; Auditory Learners-need to hear it/ sing it; Kinesthetic Learners- need to feel it/ move it.
Try looking at the things your son does well and you may see a pattern. You and his teachers will have to think out of the box to really help him. As a teacher I learned that there are different types of intelligence besides just being book smart. For example some people are really musical, others are gifted with words, still other are really gifted socially. Once we can recognize these talents and gifts it can help to determine how to present information to him so that he will retain it AND enjoy learning.
I also recommend exposing him to one or two extra curricular activities. Playing an instrument, a sport, art etc. These activities require critical thinking and creativity which will strenthen his mental "muscles". Check out the website below. They offer a test to figure out ones learning style and offer great tips.
Be encouraged. Some of the most talented, successful people didn't do well in traditional educational settings. When you find a strength in him, whatever it is, add an ounce of time and nurturing, and he will begin to blossom!!! Peace be with you and God bless.

Don't worry. I am a man of 62 years old. I forget what I ate in the morning at the afternoon. But I remember what I have studied in my child hood about Newtons law and Pythagoras theorem. That all depends upon the interest and involvement in your activities. Try to make the things what you should remember in your life to enjoyable to you. show more interest in the subject what you should keep in your memory. Forget immediately what is not going to be useful in your future. Your brain has got certain limitation.

If you're looking for long term memory retention in 14 year olds, you probably want to make sure that it is something they enjoy... As a college student and future teacher, the method I would suggest is having them begin learning stuff they like... For example, have them listen to music and sing the songs... Then move on to other things such as ways to remember math formulas or english grammar... PS- They're 14, so set realistic goals...
