the only difference i have noticed is between the ones that go right on the toilet and the stand alone models. Brands haven't seemed to make a difference much with my first two kids. We just bought my two year old(third baby) son his first potty, it is Fisher Price and has lights and music but, i don't remember the name of the model.
I prefer the stand alone for a couple of reasons. They have a guard for boys when sitting to pee. Also the ones that fit right over the seat always leaked and i had to wipe down the toilet seat(and more) anyway. Another mom i know completely disagrees and hates dumping and cleaning the bowl of the stand alone model. As far my kids are concerned, they all preferred the stand alones. Their feet dangled even with a step stool and they needed help even after the potty training was going smoothly.
I wish you lots of luck,...my son was very excited upon getting his potty. He promptly took off his diaper and after about a minute looked down and said, "It not working" and hasn't been very interested in finding out if we fixed the potty since. ;)

I am using a BOON brand(from Target) it is very short and flat, it has a bowl that pulls out from underneath and the pee guard(a must fro little boys) is rubber so that it doesn't have to be removed when pulling it out. It also opens on each side for a role of his own toilet paper. It is perfect for using as a step stool, as it is very sturdy, that is what we have been using it for and will use it for afterward, I am all about multitasking products!

As long as they can stand, I didn't use a potty chair for my son. He liked the idea of standing up and playing target with the big potty. For pooping he sat on the regular potty, but we got a small stool so he had something to rest his feet on while he sat ( i read that that was important).

(First, keep in mind that often 2 year olds -ESPECIALLY BOYS- aren't ready to be trained.) I use a padded toddler-sized seat that goes on the regular toilet; it doesn't have a big hole (that scared my son) and if they end up sitting for a while, it's soft. Plus you can take it with you if you travel, and you don't have to clean a potty. If you get a potty chair, don't use the "boy guard" that comes with it; they can catch themselves when they sit/get up. If you teach them just to sit to pee (I do so there's no accidental pooping while standing) just have them push their penises downwards.

to go with the "standing" aspect, throw some cheerioes or other small floating cereal into the bowl...works great for target practice!
as for the bowl, I use the Fisher Price "Royal Potty"
I will admit, it is a little excessive with the bells and whistles - it makes "royal sounds" when something goes into the removable bowl- and it has a pee guard too
