our's is in the laundry room. I have cedar blocks hidden in there to give off a good smell. Try putting baking soda into the litter mix as well.
You might want to change the food to a high quality food. The cheaper foods are what makes the poop smell.

My cats litter box is in my bathroom. It has a lid on it and that helps keep the smell in and filter it, but I clean it 2 times a day and I use either fresh scoop or arm & hammer scoopable cat litter and I clean it once per week. I have people over quite often and they have never complained of a cat smell, and if there was a cat smell they would tell me. My cats are kept very clean and there is no smell, my sisters don't like cats and they would tell me. So I guess I am doing something right if they don't even know a cat lives here until they see him!

If I may ask why do you want to put it in the closet?? The cat needs the litter box so he can go potty. I assume you won't have the door closed. I use a covered litter box. You can get them at walmart for about $10. We filter it every other day and change it once a week. The cover contains the smell. Most of the time you can't even tell a cat lives here. Good luck

Do not put your litter box in the closet. Cats like an opened space where they can see what's going on. Every book/website on cats will tell you so.
Plus, with no air motion, the humidity and smell will stay concentrated, and that is hazardous for the cat and you: there will be faster bacterial growth.
So, if you do this anyway, make sure you clean it everyday!
P.S.: if you want less smell and less bacteria, try a clumping litter with drying crystals that remove all moisture. I found "Fresh Step w/crystals" is very good - there is never any smell or wet wastes. Then you don't need anything else to deodorize! :)

Our litter pan is in a closet, (we have 2 cats), I purchase cat pan liners that have baking soda in them, they seem to help. If it a urine odor you can check your local pet store there is a litter additive called Ammo Cat that you can also try. If your cat is not eating a high quality pet food I would strongly suggest it, both the urine and the stool will also have less of a smell as well. Good Luck.
PS_you may also want to switch from a scooping litter to a more natural litter such as Sweet Scoop, Feline Pine or Yesterdays News.

My cat box is in a hall closet I use for cleaning supplies and tools. I use scoopable litter; clean it up once a day; sprinkle a little Glade "Rainshower" carpet freshner in the litter and spray Pure Citrus deoderizer in the closet. It doesn't smell bad as long as I do that.

I use Fresh Scoop. the clumping kind, and it has NO bad smell at all. I only scoop the clumps out twice a day and you only change it once a month! (my parents use it and they never change it, but I love kitty and I want her to have fresh liter.
Yeah, and we keep it in the computer room. Where I spend A LOT of time!

I have two cat boxes in the closet, which helps to maintain odor. Use baking soda in your litter box

I would use frebreze anitbacterial on your closet every couple of days. It gets rid of the odors, it doens't mask them.
Or you could put a box of baking soda by the litter box to absorb any other odors
As for litter, have you tried using the crystals? We switched to them awhle ago, and the odor control is amazing!
