I think its a bad plan. First reason is studies have shown that kids in over sized or larger vehicle's have a much higher chance of being in an accident. Second the gas prices are going to go back up so unless you want to always pay for his gas I would at least recommend getting one with the best MPG, Also with an SUV he will be more likely to have more people in the car at a time increasing the risk of him becoming distracted. If he has an accident while it is filled with other kids you are responsible so I would carry a very large insurance policy. The Honda CRV has the best MPG of the group but I wouldn't recommend it unless you want him to get picked on. The Nissan Murano is a good choice if you don't mind spending the money. I know I sound like an old person but I'm only 21 It hasn't been that long since I have been cramped in to an explorer with 12 people. The best thing that every happed was me selling it and getting a car. The reason is I didn't have to give 12 friends rides every where and the gas savings was great, 90% of the time I didn't need that room, and my used 03' BMW 330xi is much more fun to drive and the payments are not any higher than what my 02' explorer were. Just some food for thought hope it helps.

you need to look at all the alternatives. Research the best types of cars for teens. Pickups are actually a good choice because it prevents your teen from piling all his friends in the back (creating a distraction) and they will keep the occupant more safe in a crash than smaller cars. If you insist on an SUV you need to stick to compact SUV's. Insurance will be high because SUV's are prone to roll-overs. If you get a big SUV, wether it be you, or your son paying for gas, you'll both regret it. I would go for Toyota Rav4 or Honda CRV if you want the best out of foreign cars. Buying a sequioa just screams gas guzzler. Pilot doesn't appeal to teens.

I wish my parents had bought me a car when I turned 16. Or when I turned 18. Or when I got my diploma. Or when I got my bachelor's degree.
I think that buying your son a car is an awful idea, but if you are already planning to do it, then I would at least suggest that he pay for the insurance and fuel to teach him a smidgen of fiscal responsibility.
And please don't get him an SUV. Save your (and his) money, and get a used compact car that will get him from here to there.
I'm not a fan of American cars either. I'd suggest a Honda Civic - they're reliable and easy to drive. A used fairly-late-model one should run about $10,000-$12,000.

I applaud your decision in buying your son a vehicle. I hope he learns to appreciate the fact that vehicles are not just handed to them and that the vast majority of us have to work very hard to afford an SUV. Secondly, at 16 years old and I assume, not much driving experience, do you think an SUV is a wise decision in these formative driving years? Think about it for a moment. Insurance and gas and overall cost. Don't let me stop you though. I hate to get between a man and his machine but for practical purposes, unless you live out in the boonies and you absolutely have to have an SUV.

Well it's not an SUV but the Pontiac Vibe has storage like an SUV and gets great gas mileage. It also has an electric socket which I think it pretty cool, and is under $20k even with added features. (And even though it's a Pontiac, it's basically the same as a Toyota Matrix and all the components are from Toyota, Pontiac just assembles it).

First of all you should buy him a cheap american made car. Take my advice i had 3 car accidents from 16-18 and american cars are much cheaper to fix. Why a suv, hope your son has a good job to pay for all that gas....

I would prefer Honda CRV or Pilot.
Environment Friendly too. with style.
Safety feature mark up.
But be careful choosing he just turn 16 may be a SUV is big for him to Handel, also he need to be responsible driver. Try a small car like Honda Civic.

I'd rather buy him a sports car than an SUV. Because 16 year olds will speed and an SUV will overturn when driven too fast in to a turn.
