It dates back to their early ancestors who circled to pat down tall grasses or brush to make a comfortable bed to lay on. If your dog scratches its bed, carpet, etc. before lying down, then that too, is an instinct from the ancestors. Wild dogs scratched before they layed down to ruffle up twigs and branches that might poke them if they just layed down on it, to get them out of the way. It most certainly is nothing to be alarmed of....just natural instinct.

It's nesting instinct. If they were living in the wild, they'd walk in circles to clear a spot in the tall grass before lying down.
