Yes they do. I work for a large bank and we have a mass number of customers who open the accounts on-line. Why, you ask? First, its convenient. You can open an account at 3am while suffering from insomnia, wearing only your bunny slippers. Second, banks often give incentives to opening your account on line. They may offer a better interest rate or they may give "free" gifts.

If anyone chooses to open a bank account on line, just make sure that if you have an issue )that you need to talk to or see someone at the bank) you are not charged for it. Let's face it - a bank is a business and has to make it's money somehow. In many instances it is more cost effective for you to input your own information than for you to go to a branch and have an employee spend 45 minutes with you.

The bank is of course still responsible for obtaining and verifying your identity. Accounts that are opened on line are monitored closely for fraudulent activity and if you do not provide the information in a timely fashion, the account will be closed.

With the growing interest of online shopping, many people have converted to online banking. It's convenient, simple, and of no cost. According to emarketer.com, there are 45 million people who use online banking. I'm positive that at least a couple million of those opened there account online.
