Gobal warming is nothing more than the NATURAL cycle of the Earth. I love how these people out there are so brainwashed by what they hear (i.e. None of the information out there is more than stipulation and guessing...it is NOT factual). Yes, the Earth has gone through some changes. The human race is NOT responsible or all the scientists that "agree" with what is happening, would be able to PROVE it but they can not. But to the two people that were the first to reply to your question...use your own advice...get cracking on some research and don't rely on the JADED CNN and Fox news. Al Gore, HAHA, I really don't even need to comment. That movie had no scientific backing...NONE. Do your research people...It is not accurate on anything. Just more liberal BS.

Global warming is just that...average temperatue for the world.
As climates change, winds change, pressure systems form and change and the weather changes.
We have seen the El Nino and El nina in North America...is that caused by global warming in the Pacific, thus affecting weather in the north.
It is said that the Gulf Stream would be affected and cause the warm water warming Europe to stop, causing an Ice Age there.
Meantime, the equator could get super hot, the great plaine become a desert and such.
Global Warming means global change, not necessarily an increase.
-----------
To your question specifically, the fact that the wineter is relatively warm means that the Great Lakes have not frozen enough to prevent moisture from them to cause such snow. IF it was colder, the lakes would freeze and the humid lake would not be a snow generator. The difference in New York be matter of average temperature being 33 degrees rather than 29 degrees. Global warming?
Is this a normal cycle of weather this year, or is it a global warming affect? that is the real question. In that case, it could be either.

It has been argued that global warming is natural and cyclical in nature, and there is evidence that that is true. In the past, natural warming cycles were balanced by natural cooling cycles which provided an average temperature that we evolved to take advantage of.
But things are different this time. The current global warming episode is not natural, and its not cyclical. It is man made and there are no counterbalancing forces to prevent us getting to a tipping pont, that is a point at which self-perpetuating energy generating events super-heat the planet. Here's a very simple example. A thunderstorm sends up a huge cloud. Hot air is trapped between the cloud and the earth's surface. The hot air causes the thunderstorm to put out an even larger cloud, trapping more hot air which causes an even larger cloud, and so on.
When that happens I'm sure the questioner will not be asking "why Mr. Gore, why?" but "Why didn't someone warn me?"

Others have pointed out the difference between weather (short term and local) and climate (long term and spread out).
But global warming may have played role in the huge snows. They were "lake effect" snows. Cold air passing over warmer lakes and turning water vapor from the lakes into snow. Warmer lake waters evaporate more water vapor and cause more snow. This stuff isn't simple.
Which is why non-scientists are the chief deniers of global warming. Most all scientists understand the complexity much better. And they say global warming is real, that we're the cause, and that it presents a very serious danger to our way of life and to human lives.

And that'swhy these people, who are not fools, accept that it's real. You may not respect all of them, but surely you respect some.
"The science of global warming is clear. We know enough to act now. We must act now."
James Rogers, CEO of Charlotte-based Duke Energy.
"The overwhelming majority of atmospheric scientists around the world and our own National Academy of Sciences are in essential agreement on the facts of global warming and the significant contribution of human activity to that trend."
Russell E. Train, former environmental official under Presidents Nixon and Ford
"We simply must do everything we can in our power to slow down global warming before it is too late. The science is clear. The global warming debate is over."
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican, Governor, California
"Our nation has both an obligation and self-interest in facing head-on the serious environmental, economic and national security threat posed by global warming."
John McCain, Republican, Senator, Arizona
"These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment - and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change."
President George Bush

The rate of global warming is about 0.03 degrees C per year.
The root-mean-square deviation in the average annual worldwide temperature is about 0.1 degree C.
Therefore, global warming could be true and there is still a reasonable statistical likelihood of 5-year-long periods where the average annual worldwide temperature declines.
To cite specific temperatures on specific dates at specific places is totally irrelevant.

Well in reality global warming is going to cause NY to get much colder. As the global temp increases then the polar ice caps melt (which they are in the process of doing) This causes millions of gallons of fresh water to enter into the ocean, disrupting the saline concentration that drives the Gulf Stream current, which is responsible for bringing up warm water from the South and preventing us from living in arctic temperatures during the winter.

the so-called "global-warming" is more a weather disbalance: while some places reach higher temperatures, other reach lower ones... rain pour in an area that was dry for years, and some place with usual and regular annual seasons get them upside down... for an instance, here in Mexico City, usually december-january were dry and cold, and since a few years back we've got hot weather in december, and rains in january... cold weather in august, and dry july (usually rain season). These changes affects crops, fishing... the unusually strong hurricanes are also an effect...

It is all a political lie. In Texas the weather changes so much we say that only a newcomer or fool will try to forecast the weather. Now that is for a week . They think they can forecast it for the hole world and for years in advance. There are many that have been brain washed .

You need to get off your lazy rear-end and learn about the effects of global warming. Your question makes it clear how little you actually know about the subject.
In short, one of the effects of global warming is more extreme temperatures on both ends - warm and cold - but the average will increase overall.
