My mom came up to visit me in my dorm for the first time since the beginning of the semester. She seen my container of vaseline and she's like "why do you have this-what do you use it for". My moms pretty old so its not like she's never seen it before. Any ways she seemed less freaked out when i told her i put it on my face before running-especially when its cold and windy. And she left it alone, but why did she ask about it. She doesn;t pick up my stapler and ask waht i use it for. Is there some use for vaseline that i've never heard of before. I know its used for dry skin and cuts but what else.

Hi Steph,
I'm an older lady and in my younger days. Young couples used it as a lubricant to help in having sex. To make it easier and help so it wouldn't hurt.

Okay then. Here's your answer. Petroleum Jelly(i.e. Vaseline) was long ago first described as a "health product" that the petroleum industry had people spread on their morning toast to help with bowel movements(hence the term "petroleum JELLY"!). It's also used as a medium for things like antibacterial jelly and some automotive applications. Also(and here's where and why your mom could have asked what she asked), for many years it has been used(although not without some discomfort!) a lubricant for ALL sexual activities! I'm sure you can picture which ones too! If you're looking for a less conspicuous product to use so as to avoid this question or any implications from your mom in the future, get something with zinc oxide. It protects better than Vaseline alone and even helps your skin better as well! Cold water divers swear by the stuff also.

Yep. Vaseline was used as a sexual lubricant and thats probably why she was asking you what you were using it for. By the way, it is not a good sexual lubricant. In fact, it is a horrible lubricant. It has many uses and for what you use it for is a good thing. It helps prevent chapping and it adds a little moisture to the skin. You are using it wisely. Maybe you should ask your mom to explain herself now :-) See what she says.

actually vaseline has been around much more longer tha your mom's age

That she is not aware, that does not mean vaseline is not useful for many things

This is a bit of history

The raw material for petroleum jelly was discovered in 1859 in Titusville, Pennsylvania where it was stuck to some of the first oil rigs in the U.S. The riggers hated the paraffin-like material because it caused the rigs to seize up, but they used it on cuts and burns because it hastened healing. Robert Chesebrough, a young chemist whose previous work, distilling fuel from the oil of sperm whales, had been rendered obsolete by petroleum, went to Titusville to see what new materials had commercial potential. Chesebrough took the unrefined black "rod wax", as the drillers called it, back to his laboratory to refine it and explore potential uses.

Chesebrough discovered that by distilling the lighter, thinner oil products from the rod wax, he could create a light-colored gel. Chesebrough patented the process of making petroleum jelly (U.S. Patent 127,568 ) in 1872. The process involved vacuum distillation of the crude material followed by filtration of the still residue through bone char. Chesebrough travelled around New York State demonstrating the product to encourage sales.

Chesebrough opened his first factory in 1870 in Brooklyn. The brand name Vaseline was coined, by some accounts, as a combination of the German word for water, wasser (pronounced vahser), and the Greek word for oil, elaion.
