i have a bike rack made by Allen. the particular one i have holds 3 bikes and has a triple strap securing system (2 on top, 1 on the bottom) and i trust it to hold my $3000 bike. i just use bungy cords to hold it down tight. it cost about $45.
my friend has one that holds 4 bikes and it has 4 straps to hold it down but it cost about $70 i think. bottom line, these things are pretty reasonably priced and they are very secure. they are also adjustable to fit SUVs, trucks, hatchbacks, 4 doors, pretty much any car.

a step up would be a hitch mounted rack, if you have a hitch available. they cost more but they wont fall off.

if you want more security, then spend $100 on a roof rack to hold one bike.
