I want to get a system for my '02 Cougar. I want a lot of bass. I don't really know much about systems though. All my friends were telling me to get 2 12" subs. But what brands are good? Also, I don't have a lot of money. I wanted to spend under $300.

For "major bass" you could easily spend $300 just for the amp.

I will suggest only buying amps that are CEA-2006 compliant....http://www.crutchfield.com/S-xYBX8YSIdPm/popups/cacomp.html

Always look at the watts RMS, not MAX or PEAK.

For subs, the higher the dB sensitivity (>90 dB) and the lower the Hz, the better.

You will need to...

Run a power wire of the correct gauge from the battery with a fuse no more than 18" from the battery to the amp. The fuse should be a total of the fuse rating on the amp.

If you don't have an aftermarket stereo, run a fused (1 amp) wire from the ignition ACC to another switch to the REM (remote) connection on the amp. This allows for full control and you never have to worry about forgetting to turn off the amp. The switch is so you can turn off the amp at will so as not to give grandma a heart attack in the car.

If you do have an aftermarket stereo, connect the blue remote turn -on from the stereo to the REM connection on the amp.

The ground should be the same size as the power wire and securely grounded to the chassis of the car.

You can use a "line level converter" tapped from the speaker out of the head unit if you don't have an after market HU.

If you have an aftermarket, run RCA's from the output to the amp.

Be sure the last thing you hook up is the power.

This is the very basics of an install.

$300 is not alot to get what you call "alot of bass". I would recommend looking on ebay or half.com. 2 good 10's in a ported enclosure would produce more than enough bass in your car. Look into unknown companies like Interfire audio or DB Drive. I have used Interfire and their amps produce great power at great prices. I have not used their subs, but, if they are anything like their amps, they would be reasonably priced and you may be able to get both a 2 channel amp and 2 10" subs for under $300. As for the box, they are easily found on ebay. Hope this helps.

Get it off ebay!
Get 2 12" Kicker subs
and a 600 watt kicker amp.
it should run you about 250.00-300.00
but itll will rock ya ride.. Guaranteed!
then you'll have to get all the wires, and box etc..
you wont regret it..
