They say 1/3 of the planet's oxygen is generated by the rain forests, so for a few dollars you can certainly help the Sierra Club or World Wildlife Fund purchase more rain-forest acreage.
But I also believe that ocean, lake and river algae produces a ton of oxygen, so helping to keep our ocean algae healthy by working to keep waterways and oceans clean is also something you can do.
I don't believe there is really ~anything~ you can buy to plant yourself which would have much impact. You are better off putting a few dollars and effort into supporting ecological organizations or by simply modifying your lifestyle to decrease toxic emissions.
Good question though!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You would want a fast growing tree. I would rule out using sweet gum because it has a low value as a wood for other purposes. Actually, you do not need just trees, any plant or bush would work just as well. They all absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Trees take a long time to become truly viable. The shrubs and other smaller fast growing plants would be more effective.

While trees to take in carbon dioxide (in the daytime) and put out oxygen, they are far from the most efficient. And they put out carbon dioxide at night, too. Hardly stopping carbon emission.
The most efficient gobblers of carbon dioxide are oceanic plankton and algae. You have to be very careful about stimulating more growth of such, even lichen. All of these could tip the balance the other way rapidly.
So, plant whatever you wish, but do not expect it to matter a lot.

None, because planting trees does not stop cars from emitting carbon. You may (incorrectly) think that such and such a number of trees can offset the emission from one car, but offsetting is not the same as eliminating.

It is not just trees. All green plants including algae. This is where Mother nature recycles your air ,and is the beginning of the recycle of our fossil fuels. Consider that the earth is a space ship on a very long trip so Mother nature needs to recycle many things. Where do u think our original fossil fuels came from.

On an acre-to-acre comparison, grass consumes more carbon emissions than trees. Build more golf courses.
