First off, determine who is paying for what. Will the other maids' contribute equally or will the lion's share fall to you? This is a good starting point b/c that will determine how small or large of a party it could be, plus if it can be held in someones home or at a restaurant/hall. After you have that determined, try to set a date and then book a place, and start gathering a guest list. You don't need a theme, but can find a lot of different examples on the net (ie. around the clock theme, holiday theme, lingerie, room by room etc etc). If you will be hosting this event at someones home, start to figure out what food to serve/make and what games (if any) you want to do. My suggestion...keep the games short and simple..a lot of people don't like them. The favors are really the last thing to do, candies, candles, etc. Most people start with the favor, but it's probably the very least important thing for a shower. Good luck!

Depending on the ages of most of the people attending will have a big part in your planning. If there are a lot of older people, don't plan too many activites where people will have to get up and do things. But if you are having a younger crowd go for it. Here is what I did for my sisters bridal shower I threw:
First off, I had an ice breaker so everyone that didn't know each other could talk to each other. I did a game that involved me writing down famous couples in history on some index cards. Then I taped them on peoples backs so they didn't know who they had. Then they had to go up to people and ask questions and you had to get clues from other people to see what couple was on your back.
Secondly, I did a game that was pretty funny, it was called "kiss the grooms ***". I took a pin the tail on the donkey that you could buy anywhere, and took a picture of her fiance and blew it up and put it over the head of the donkey. Then I had all these lipsticks that I got for free that I never used and all the ladies put it on and were blindfolded and you had to kiss the the donkey and get closest to its *** to win. It was hilarious!
Next I had a craft. One of the major things brides forget at their wedding is having a card box on their gift table. I went out a cot 3 cardboard boxes, and some nice white fabric and ribbon and lots of accesories. Then I seperated everyone into teams and they had to decorate the card boxes, and the bride chose a winner.
During the gift opening everyone got to ask the bride a question about the groom that I had previously asked him. If she got it right, she got to open a gift. If she got it wrong, she had to pick a "stunt" out of this jar I had. This had a lot of silly embarrassing things but it was a lot of fun.
During the party I had tons of food and drinks which is IMPORTANT. People love food...
Oh, and I also had a jar of M&M's in her wedding colors that people had to guess how many were in it.
For prizes, I got things from Tastefully Simple (they have some of the best stuff). Some other good ideas for favors would be bread from Great Harvest or spices, or bath and body stuff. Or if your on a budget, post-it notes or things like that.
I had the shower at my house. Its great to have the shower at a laid back setting so you can do lots of fun stuff. You don't necessarily need a theme but if you wanted, on the invitations assign everyone a room in the house and they can buy gifts according to that room.
Oh, and don't forget to put where the bride and groom are registered at when you send out the invites.
One last cool idea is to ask everyone to bring their favorite recipes on 3 X 5 notecards. Then put them together in a recipe book for the bride.
I hope all this is helpful. Good luck!

I bought each of my bridesmaids and maid of honor a bridesmaid handbook and a gift to them. They absolutely loved it! It will take you step by step of everything you will need to do for the bridal shower, bachlorette party and then some. This is something you can pick up at any bookstore. This was the one I bought.
