If your crush does not know you, you would say "Hello". If they do know you, you would say "How is it going?".
If you want to flare up a conversation, ask them a question that interests you. If you want them to be interested in you, be interesting. If you can get them to talk, then you are on your way. If they only answer in "yes" or "no", then you aren't trying that hard. If you can't think of anything interesting to get them to talk about, then you may be too attached already.
Friendly "Why" or "How come" questions are good.
Susie: Hey Jason, how's it going?
Jason: Not bad, sup?
Susie: I saw a guy just like you the other day, do you have an older brother?
Jason: Doubtful, I'm an only child.
Susie: Really, how do you handle your "Only Child Syndrome" so well?
Chances are Jason does have "Only Child Syndrome" which basically means he's used to having things his way. Odds are this has been a reoccuring, but very minor, issue in his life. You have snuck in a compliment, shown insight and actual interest. At this point even if you are a disgusting hose beast he is going feel compelled to let you know he is just a down to earth guy that probably grew up with a bunch of friends or cousins.
Personally though, I choose to save my wittiness and brain power for when I really need them. Being interesting is VERY hard work. That's why I've been pretty lazy and have been flirting with this cheap cell flirt service (http://x.azjmp.com/0KLjv).
Eventually you need the conversation skills, but I'd rather know off the bat if the they are interested in me before I try to be all witty.

ok you say hello my name is so and so. Then you ask him what he likes to do. Then you tell him you admire him. Then you tell him he smells nice. Ask abt the weather. Tell him you want to get to know him better and ask him out to lunch.
