BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS AND FALSE RELIGIONS.
Can't say it any plainer than that. Thank you and GOD bless.

I'm a Catholic, and I love Mary. Not because she's God (she isn't), not because I think she's more important than God (she's not), but because she is such a beautiful role model for Christians everywhere.

She was humble, contemplative, kind, and caring. She risked her own life to bring an apparently "illegitimate" Child into this world so that the rest of us could find salvation when He grew to manhood.

She pondered the prophecies of Anna and Simeon in her heart about that little Son of hers. She knew she was going to lose Him to a violent and painful death, but she stayed steady and strong for Him. She gave up her home and went to live in Egypt just because God said so.

She worried about her neighbors being embarassed when they didn't have enough wine -- a big social stigma back then. She lived the life of a poor carpenter's wife, which was not exactly a huge honor.

And most of all, she stayed with Jesus until the very end, no matter how much it felt like a sword was going through her heart. That alone would be enough to make me love her as a sister and a friend.

So that is why this particular Catholic Christian loves and respects Mary. I don't worship her, but I think she's about as neat a person as anyone ever gets to be. You could do a lot worse for a role model, that's for sure.

Your argument is saying we should emphasize Eve.

Catholics emphasize the Trinity of God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Mary is considered special because she was conceived without original sin and she agreed to become the mother of God made flesh, Jesus.

The emphasis is on the Trinity. No Catholic will ever tell you that Mary is more important than the Father, Son or Holy Spirit. However, they also place a significant amount of importance on her role as an intercessor. I don't agree with it...one of several reasons why I converted from Catholicism. All Christians revere her as the mother of our Lord, but not to the level that Catholics do. That being said, I came from a parish of black Catholics and there was no doubt of their love for the Lord.

I place more importance on finding the areas where we agree.

Correction on a prior answerer: Catholicism teaches that Mary was assumed into heaven by God. She could not do that on her own. Jesus ascended into heaven under His own divine power.

Um. The first commandment is Honor they God...

Just because Mary has her own day of celebration and her own prayer doesn't mean that they hold her to the same level as God. She is merely a conduit through which God communicates to them.

I have never heard anyone "emphasize" Mary to the point where she was equal to Yawaeh.

Further question: Why do Protestants think that their version of "The Truth" is any more valid than the Original (Catholic) version from which THEY pick and choose waht they wanted like some big Mythological Country Buffet???)

Well he could just as easily have found another woman if Mary didn't exist. Her story is purely circumstantial.

Also doesn't it sound familiar for a god to come and impregnate a mortal woman? Sound anything like Zeus? That's where the virgin birth story came from. The virgin birth story was added later by Luke and Mathew to make it conform to the old testament prophecies.

So don't forget to include Joseph - without him there would also be no story. Interestingly, the earliest gospel writers (Mark and Paul) clearly state that Joseph was the father, not god, and that Mary was not a virgin... Early texts also refer to his name as "Yeshua ben Yoseph" (Jesus son of Joseph). Go figure.

The key answer to the universe might be,
Why does anyone look away from Jesus, and try to find another to worship?
It doesn't matter what the Catholic's or anyone else believe. What matters is your personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
If you spend your time building that up, instead of wondering why other's don't, you will be a happier person in the long run.

What you say about Mary's maternal lineage is correct. . . BUT...

Your question is about Catholicism and its emphasis on Mary. As other answers explain, she was an important part of the story, but the main story is JESUS!

What none of the answers explain is "Why did he choose Mary?" True, she was obedient and pure. Well, we like to think she was MORALLY pure, though the Bible gives no real information on that. The Bible also makes it clear that the immaculate conception is Mary's of Jesus, NOT God's of Mary! Why was Mary chosen to be the mother of God? Large portions of the Bible, both Testaments, is devoted to lineage. To "__ begot __ who begot __", etc,! Why?

I think God was working on the DNA of His creation, mankind. He kept the Jews "pure-blooded" among themselves, gave them strict dietary laws and strict laws to govern conduct. These 10 commandments include "no adultery" to keep them from inbreeding. God was creating a "pure" gene pool from which to bring forth His physical embodiment-- Jesus Christ!

The reason that Mary is revered is because she was the culmination of years of God's work on the Jewish people. She was the receptacle for His "human" form. If she was good enough for God, she is good enough to pray to even today!

But the main story is: God became "human" to show his love for His creation. Mary was just part (a big part) of that story. She did not ascend immediately into heaven, but proceeded to have other children who were "pure" Jews! Don't forget that God also purified Joseph's lineage!

Without God none of them would have been here, and you wouldn't be here asking about it.
Catholics should not emphasize Mary so much. If not for her, God would have chosen another woman, and Jesus would still be Jesus.
