i have chin-length, layered colored hair

i know i can do it with setting lotion, clips, and my fingers. but a stylist friend told me she 'cheats' by using a curling iron and clamping it down on the hair. she's since moved and i was wondering if anyone else knew how to do that and what i would need (ie technique, type of curling iron, product, etc.) to get the look? thanks!

Having a little natural curl or perm helps. But you won't get finger waves with a curling iron. After washing your hair apply a lot of "Dippity do" gel and them using your comb and fingers make waves. You'll also need some long clips to hold the waves in place. Let your hair dry completely and then remove the clips. Have fun!

Those waves were done with heavy pomade, not an iron. You could use a heavier gel or a waxy pomade like Sebastian's Molding Mud or Grease and form the waves with your fingers.

I think hot rollers would work better in giving you the effect you want.
