It all boils down to respect. To value. Animals are tortured and brutally killed because the people responsible do not value their lives. They do not respect them, or care that they hurt. As an above person mentioned, it isn't about eating meat, it is about how animals are treated in the whole process.
Lack of value and respect is at the core of all torture, and horrible acts. Abortion happens because the lives of the unborn are not valued and respected enough by a. the person getting the abortion and B. the doctor doing it. The Holocaust occurred because Hitler and his regimen didn't value or respect the lives of the Jews, seeing them as nothing more than dirt. All of these horrible acts on animals comes from the same mindset. The people who are responsible do not see these creatures as valuable. They do not see their pain and suffering as important.
I watched some of those videos, and became physically ill, just as I have watched other videos and felt the same thing ( abortion, etc). It doesn't matter what I felt though, as I have the respect and value for ALLLL life that would prevent me from ever doing anything remotely like what has been mentioned. The problem is...how do you get those people to value lives that they don't? That is a question that needs a good answer, if there even is one. CAN you change someones views? The pro life movement tries all the time with many different tactics, some of which are just as horrible as the actions of " the other side." As for all of these poor creatures that are treated like nothing more than the poop off someones shoe, how do you cause people to value their lives?
I guess we don't KNOWINGLY support any of it. I guess we buy free range beef and eggs, etc?
I'm sorry, I don't have a better answer, other than the only way to really stop it all is to change the people's views who are involved.

You know, eating any animal is not a crime but making it a painful process IS. We owe it to the animals we use to end their lives swiftly and as painlessly as possible. allowing any animal to suffer as they die is unconscienable. Sadly, in many of these countries, beating the animal before killing it is considered a good thing (it is said that the pain and stress causes particular chemicals to be released in the body that enhance flavor). Skinning alive and cutting their throats and letting them bleed out is common. There is a video on the net which shows two guys cutting the dog's throat as it cries and bleeds to death. It's not appropriate in any country and certainly the animals deserve a better ending. The dogs are at our mercy we should give them a death that we ourselves would not be afraid of.

The Chinese also treat their people very badly. Not a good place to live for people or animals.
Sign all the petitions you want, the Chinese government doesn't give a chit what you think.

Cows and pigs are being skinned alive as we speak, so that McDonald's can serve Big Macs and Bacon Double Cheeseburgers.

oh for crying out loud like this is the first time anyone has heard that people in Asia eat dogs and cats? where do you think all the jokes about Chinese diners using cat and dog in their food? if you have never tried dog or cat how can you knock someone for eating it. it might be quite delicious. we are one of the few countries that don't eat dog, cat, horse, insects. they have farms here in the states that raise horses specifically to sell for food across seas. we raise all kinds of animals and slaughter them to feed billions and billions of people. what makes it so bad to use other types of animals to feed people. now if they were raising babies to feed people then THAT would be an atrocity.

Yup, I'm wearing one's fur on the hood to my "faux" fur jacket right now.
Didn't know it when I bought it though.
What are you going to do about it, set up a lab in your basement and test every product that comes along?
The government is already trying to speed-pass a law right now to ban the import of raccoon dog fur as we write this anyway, so chill out.
The government, big corporations, and just about everyone else lies to us in order to make money. All we can do is go by what they tell us and try to educate ourselves and make an informed decision.
