I think the idea of the champagne fountain much better, but if you do get a chocolate fountain. On one of my cooking shows, they said you can use it for other sauces (barbecue was mentioned).
Wal-Mart carries one if your budget is tight.

To rent a chocolate fountain is pretty expensive. But if you do, they will include a certain amount of chocolate with your choice of fruit, wafers, etc to dip. I do agree that they can be messy, but they are cool. You know what would be better than a chocolate fountain though, is a champagne fountain. A lot of times at weddings you have a bottle of wine or champagne at the table for the toast. But you can just buy the stuff by the bottle and have the people catering your reception fill the fountain as needed so you only pay for what is being drunk. Yay for alcohol!

Chocolate fountains are all the rage now, and the best way to get one for your wedding would be to go with a local firm. Look in the back of your yellow pages, there is an entire section under 'W' for weddings. Also, why not try one of your local newspapers. If there are no Chocolate Fountains in there, there may be details of a local wedding fair.
The company will bring everything you will need for your chocolate fountain, including the chocolate and the fruit, marshmallows and fudge to dip in it.
Be warned though, Only get one if you are having a large reception room as they can smell very sweet and sickly in an enclosed space.
Hope this helps

We've got one that we use for parties. Just by nature of what it is, it can be messy - however careful you are. Wouldnt be my choice for a wedding. I went to a wedding fair last year before i got married and they had one there with a whole heap of fruit, marshmallows etc and the darn thing wasnt working! It would be a shame if that happened to you. You can get them most places now - try Argos or Robert Dyas. You can get the chocolate by mail order, or they tell you how much oil to add to ordinary chocolate in the instructions. You need someone to operate it on the day who knows to turn it off if the chocolate runs out!

rent one dont buy one. and a better option is the chocolate shot machine (also a rental) but much more afforadable and no mess. fountains splatter and every drop will show on ur white dress. with the chocolate shot machine all the chocolate is inside the machine so u dont have people double dipping and u donthave the splatter. every one just fills there own cup of chocolate and dips from that. they can aslo just do shots of chocolate or ad it to there coffee!

Surely not a good idea when I presume all your guests will be in their Sunday best clothing. If you persist with the idea you could purchase the fountain machine and chocolate at Tescos and possibly other similar stores. After use it will probably be stored in your loft - like ours !

I heard from a lot of people to stay clear from chocolate fountains for weddings. There's normally too many people and it gets clumpy from things being dipped into it. There's a good chance of it getting spilled or dripped everywhere, especially if you have children there. You can rent them too, but if anything happens to them, you are liable and have to pay for it. I would say, leave it to a smaller party/gathering.
I was considering having one too, but I heard enough horror stories from people that did.

do some good research before you buy. My neice bought one for Christmas; it did'nt work well at all, even though we reluctantly (for obvious reasons) added a great deal of cooking oil to the chocolate (as instructed in the manual). in the end we had to scrape out all the chocolate and wash the damn thing so that she could take it back in a disgusted way. When i related this back at work, one of my colleagues said exactly the same thing had happened to her.

I got mine at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for about $50 last year.
It actually uses regular chocolate bits (the semi-sweet morsels, like nestle) mixed with oil.
But I agree with the person who said it was very messy. If you could get someone else to set it up and break it down (the messiest) for you, preferably someone who isn't dressed up, like the caterers or someone. It's fine to eat, that you can keep under control with napkins. But setting it up and stuff...yuck.
I should add that mine is easy to clean once you get rid of all the excess chocolate. It goes right in the dishwasher! (But their is always extra chocolate. And a lot of it.)
