I agree with Robert K, don't start a religous conversation with a stranger, start a normal conversation with a stranger and seek to have a relationship with this person.
However, I have found one of the easiest questions to ask upfront is "Where do you go to Church?" or "Do you go to Church?" and allow the conversation to go from there!

Depends, are you there to learn more about the person, or push Jesus like he was a bag of weed? If the former, then talk and discuss as you would anything else, if the latter, talk to the mirror, or accept that you will not always get a good reception, and that it is a right of any human to not want to be the same as you.

With a stranger? There is no best way. Bringing up your religion to someone you don't know is rude and more than a little arrogant.
Why do you feel you need to do this?
I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone came up to you and said "I'd like to talk to you about Mithra"
If you feel the need to draw attention to yourself and your religion, carry a copy of your holy book with you everywhere and read it, those interested will approach you.

You should be ashamed of yourself asking strangers such personal questions.
I've been bugged at 711 and gas stations, one of theses days, I'm gonna do an "all hail satan" bit if you ppl don't stop bugging me.

I work with the public and when they ask me how I am doing. I reply with "I'm blessed." That starts the ball rolling! It makes them smile. Next thing you know we are talking about spirituality. We are all blessed!

First thought, do him a big favor and don't!! If you can't help yourself, because you are unusually inconsiderate and narcissistic, knee him in the groin and then demand he listen or you'll have jerry fatwell sit on his face. ;-)
