I only have 6 children and people are always saying really stupid comments to me about it. What is on your top ten list of comments people should have left to themselves?

I know what you mean...I didn't come from a large immediate family, but most of my cousins are and they always heard the dumbest comments from people. My Pops is one of 8 kids, my mom is one of 5 kids. People STILL say dumb things to my Grandma about having had 8 kids.

I have a family of just 2...our 1 year old daughter and my 14 year old stepdaughter...and even *I* get stupid comments about 1) us being a "blended" family since my stepdaughter is a stepchild, and 2) people making dumb comments about me only having one child of my own.

1. "You ONLY have one child?? What's wrong--you don't want any more??" ---ummm, no, I can't HAVE any more. But thanks for reminding me of this every day!

2. "When are you going to have MORE? Having an only-child is cruel to the child! They need companionship" ---again, I can't have more and we can't afford to adopt right now...my daughter will grow up just fine IF she remains an only-child, she'll have friends and cousins to play with.

3. "Well you don't REALLY know what it's like or how hard it is to be a mother...you only have ONE" ---I have more experience raising my ONE preemie than most of those people who say things like that to me.

4. "Oh, you and your stepdaughter must hate each other." ---WHY do people assume this?? And actually, the opposite is true: my stepdaughter and I are very close...she's closer to me than her own mother and she calls me her best friend.

But the stupidest comments ever are the ones about my child being a preemie.
5. "WHY is she a preemie? What did you do?" ---*I* did nothing wrong...I had severe preeclampsia. It was an unforunate event of nature.

6. "What's WRONG with her? Why's she so small?" ---She's a PREEMIE! She was born 3 months (12 1/2 weeks) early and weighed less than 2 lbs at birth, she's GOING to be smaller for a while.

And mind you, these are ADULTS asking these questions. Ugh!

I know my answer wasn't specifically about having a large family, but THANK YOU for letting me vent about dumb comments people make about other peoples families!

By the way, you are SO blessed to have a large family!

Are you Catholic? No
Mormon? and no
Don't you know what causes that? (harhar...I never heard THAT before....)
How do you feed them all? (with food)
I guess you don't work (WFT? I bust my butt every day)
How much money does your husband make? (Like it's any of YOUR business)
Are you trying to even up? (boys vs girls..oh yeah, that's the ONLY reason I keep having kids, darn sex ratio)
Do you qualify for group discounts? (Why, yes, we do!)
Have you ever seen Cheaper by the Dozen? (Why no, we live it)
If I had that many kids, I'd be crazy (well, that may be why God gave them all to me)
Is this a homeschooling group? (yeah, we *are* our own group!)
Are *these* all yours? (No, I stole some of them back on aisle six -or alternatively- no, we left some of them at home)

I'm number 2 in a family of four kids. Oddly enough, I've never heard any disparaging comments made toward my family. But when we go visit our L.A. relatives (3 kids) and Grandma, man do I love the look of PURE FEAR the restaurant staff gets when all twelve of us go out to eat.

I came from a family of 8 kids and the only things that I remember is them saying, that my parents sure were busy, weren't they? How big of a house did you grow up in? Are you LDS (mormon)? Why did your parent's have so many kids? I am grateful they did because I was the 8th kid.

I only have two children, but my maternal grandma had 10 children. When I once told someone that my grandmother had 10 children, they said "What are your grandparents? Part rabbits, or something?"
