I once was a nanny for an 11 year old add boy.
Meds were not meant to be a treatment but to slow down the child for the treatment process.
Good for you in making that decision.
Step one: write down 8 rules your child must obey.
Step two: develop a reward system.
Step three: develop 3 possible consequences
Step four: Involve every one in this technique.
Step five: Warn him first.
Step six: Follow through consistently.
He may need more prorein snacks throughout the day.
one doctor suggest nuts.
Do not let add be an excuse.

My child is ADHD and has an extreme case of it so we have to put him on medication. However, we don't use that medication on the weekends and control it with diet.
The processed meats, red and yellow dyes omitted from the diet works wonders. We also keep his sugar intake limited to just dessert at night. I don't know if this works for everyone else, but I do know what works for us.
Have you taken a 'parenting the add/adhd child' class? If not, I highly recommend it.
Good luck!

You can try Focus CP by Natural Creations a homeopathic. It is full of herbs that help you maintain attention. It is a clear liquid and you just place 10 drops under the tongue. I found that it does help with ADD, but not with ADHD. I am AADD and my son is ADHD, he is on medication Focalin XR. I live in Louisiana and found this from Boudreaux's New Drug Co. This pharmacist makes alot of natural things for many different illnesses and problems.

I have Asperger's Syndrome. ADD might resemble Asperger's but i was real distracted like ADHD but not exactly. I would try to make the place he does homework with less distractions as possible. I would try to teach him how to block out distractions at school bu i could never do that without paxil to control the anxiety from the constant stimulants. I hope that helps you.

I have 10 year old son that has the same thing. Not hyper just ADD. I have him on herbs from Native remedies you can check it out online. It works for me and I have stopped for awhile to see if it really works and even he says it helps him concentrate better. We will not put him on drugs that can hurt his heart and may even cause death, it isnt worth it to us.
