Microsoft had such big plans for the software and now there are all these returns, crashes due to not meeting requirements and compatibility issues. Should Microsoft just face the facts and recall Vista until a later date and will this hurt Microsoft in the future.

Well yes vista was a disappointment, and recalling a product like vista will cost millions. You need so many requirments like a good graphics card. The good ones that suppport direct X10 cost like $600 dollars. You need a good amount of ram and space in your hard drive. Like I have XP Media center edition SP2 and it works like a charm and it never crashes. There really is not rush or point to buy vista. XP is fine.

This happens every time ANY new operating system is released, whether it's Microsoft or Apple, or Sun or whoever. There are those who have to rush out and buy the latest, then spend the next 6 months or a year griping because "Microsoft ripped them off." Hogwash! You buy a piece of software at your own risk. Microsoft clearly stated the requirements for Vista before releasing it for sale. If buyers chose not to read that, or meet those requirements, they can take their complaints elsewhere.

Personally, I like XP and have no intention of buying Vista.

Nobody's going to buy it anyway. It's not worth all the trouble for us who already have Windows XP. The only people who'll get Vista are those buying new computers BUT since computers have already reached market saturation, Vista will only be enjoyed by a very very small population. This will go down in history as another Microsoft flop.

As long as people think that something you pay for is better than something that is free, Microsoft will continue to make huge profits.

Case in point, StarOffice used to be available from Sun MicroSystems free. Most people did not bother with it but continued pay for MS Office. Sun eventually released the source code to the open source community, who continue to develop it and release an excellent suite called OpenOffice ( http://www.openoffice.org ) It's free.

Also Linux operating systems are now very user friendly. There are many free versions (including UBUNTU http://www.ubuntu.com ) But because they do not have the advertising budget of MS, people only learn about them through sites like this or if somebody they know is using linux.

Most people are not aware that their computers can not handle Vista. That's part of the problem. Also, Xp is very popular, so why change when you are already satisfied?
