A power punch comes from the feet through the legs, hips, abdomen, chest, shoulder, and arm to focus in the fist. If timed right all the power released from your whole body is concentrated in the fist.
A jab is quicker and generally less powerful, the power comes from a step, slight hip turn and rotating your shoulder up.

The power comes from popping your hips into your punches and piveting your foot when you do throw puches. Mechanics, keep your elbows tight to your chest, your hands up high around your forehead cause eventually during a long fight your hands will gradually drop BUT if you start out with your hands up near your chin, when you hands do eventually drop you'll be leaving your chin exposed for a sure fire knock-out. In muay thai kickboxing you wanna stand on the balls of your feet with your lead foot out straight | and your other foot at a 45 degree angle / with the big toe of the 45 degree angled foot shoulders width parallel to the inside arch of your lead foot. I haven't a clue as to how they stand in western style boxing.

for a straight right (cross) the movement starts in turning your right foot. it continues through your leg and gains full power when your weight is transferred through your hip. the turning of the shoulder and the extension of arm and fist are the follow through. all of the power comes from the weight shift in the hips.
