The ancient people of Mesoamerica worshiped many different Gods. One of these was the feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl (Quetzal - a bird, coatl - snake) to the Toltecs and Aztecs, Kukulcan (Kukul - feather, can - snake) or Gucumatz by the Maya.
Common attributes of Quetzalcoatl among these different cultures indicate that Quetzalcoatl...
- was the creator of life
- taught virtue
- was the Greatest Lord of all
- had a long beard and features of a white man
- Mesoamericans held the belief that he would one day return
In an interesting biblical parallel, the ancient Israelites were dying from poisonous serpent bites. (Numbers 21:5-9) Moses made a serpent of brass, put it on a pole and whoever was bitten and looked up to it lived.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
eternal life. (John 3: 14–15)
As for when is the return of the feathered serpent? Probably soon.

Some believe Quetzalcoatl was a symbolic representing of Christ, or Christ-like figure. The evidence for that:
The Mexican historian Ixlilxochitl wrote "Quetzalcoatl was a man of comely appearance and serious disposition. His countenance was white, and he wore a beard, His manner of dress consisted of flowing robe."
Quetzalcoatl also seen as having had a virgin birth, was the great creator, miracle doer, prophet, promised to return and taught laws of fast etc.
The serpent has a symbolic reference to death, and the feathers a symbolic reference to resurrection.
The evidence against that: the second advent of a Quetzalcoatl figure in the 900's referred to by an earlier answer.
Which is it? I don't know, but either way it makes for some pretty interesting reading.

Feathered Serpent's name is Quezequatl.
He was a mortal once, a great ruler of the Mayans. If you want to know about his return, it'll take more time and space to explain than I have here. E-mail me.
Here's his Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatl
