First Cousin once removed is correct. If two people share the same grandparent they are first cousins. If one of those cousins has a child then that child would be one generation removed from the first cousin making them first cousins once removed.

David's line was possibly tainted by having Jeconiah/Jehoiakim -- which was cursed to never be the King of Israel again. Although, this may be side stepped depending on if Zerubbabel wasn't biological son of Shealtiel...but I don't exactly see how anyone can prove that. If he was...then Joseph cannot have an heir to the throne. The issue with Mary being linked back to David is interesting, but there is nothing in Jewish Law that allows the lineage of the mother the right to having a king. There are actually a lot of reasons as to why the Jews didn't accept Jesus as their Messiah.

They are second cousins. The Brother is an uncle to sisters son, and great uncle to any of the sons children. The brothers daughter who has a son, that makes brother a grandpa. If Sisters son has a son and he has a child, Brother becomes great uncle to that child or children.
