My 3 year old son cries about everything. He's been like this, well...since I can remember. If his sock is crooked, he cries, if he has snot on his nose, he cries...if he can't get his toy to work, he breaks down...everything little thing sets him off! He cries even when no ones around to see it or to help him. I've tried ignoring, time out and spanking...he never gets what he wants when he cries for it...I make him stop crying and ask like a big boy first. Still to no avail...I'm out of ideas to help him. I also have a 5 year old and one year old. The eldest responds well to discipline and both children are extremely happy. My 3 year old is never happy...I have to make him smile at me just to see a happy face. What is going on? I've asked myself...am I rewarding this behavior? What payoff is he getting out of this? I just can't figure it out. My husband and I try to be consistent with our discipline. I'm a stay at home mom who is with my kids constantly...what is going on? HELP!

Stop trying to figure out why he's crying.
When he starts crying (because his sock is on crooked or even if you don't know why) send him straight to time out. DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS. He can sit in the corner with a crooked sock on for the rest of the day.
Tell him that he can come out when he's done crying. Once he's stopped crying on his own, then ask what the problem is and try to help him fix it.
Maybe tomorrow he will only spend half the day in the corner crying, and the third day one hour.

here is an idea i used when my daughter was 3 and did not want to sleep in her own room ,buy lotion with sparkles in it and tell him it's magic potion when he starts crying or fussing put a little in his hand and tell him this will make everything because it;s happy sparkles.if you like this idea you can purchase sparlky roll on body glitter from walmart in the make up section for about $3.00 or less.or just invest in ear plugs[lol] angel.p
