Because everybody is so blastedly sure that they are right and someone who disagrees with them is wrong, that's why. I never thought I'd say this, but a little bit of questioning and/or doubt might benefit BOTH sides -- Christian and atheist.
If we all started with the principle of, "You know, there's room in this world for different ideas besides mine," maybe people wouldn't be so smugly sure that they have the handle on the absolute truth. And then there wouldn't be as many unholy wars as there have been.
I fully anticipate getting a batch of "thumbs-down" on this answer. So be it.

I can and do respect individuals. I tolerate their views and I accept that they see things differently than me. I have no respect at all for religions as it doesn't deserve my respect. However, that is the religion itself and not the people.
The exceptions are those people who are intolerant themselves. And despite the Christian ideals, there are a LOT of intolerant Christians and I do not respect them. There are also plenty of tolerant Christians, although not so many on this site (in the same way that the atheists here are not as tolerant as you'd expect - the Q&A setting encourages opposing views and that creates a lot of sparks).

Your concept and concept is sweet on song. the situation lies interior the human weak spot interior us all. all of us think of we are superb, and are justified interior the correction of others, after all the NT does let us know to superb our brethern. This communicate board is in comparison to writing a narrative, we've not got the possibility to set a tone, introduce the characters and lead as much as a significant subject. in many circumstances what we are saying is misconstrued. My words have been and that i've got additionally been to blame of thinking somebody replaced into harsher than they even have been. A poster some areas above me pronounced Southern Baptists and fundamentalists in connection with protesting at a funeral. rather, this has been executed. As a Southern Baptist who takes the doctrine basically, i think the could point out out that I even have by no potential taken such an action, by no potential seen taking such an action, certainly i discover it tasteless and disgraceful to attain this. no person, no longer even the main violent of criminals merits to have their funeral provider distrubed. Generalizations jointly with those do no longer serve any human beings properly. whilst i do no longer think of that she intends that each and one and all SB are funeral protesters, an casual reader could get that concept. each and every physique is permitted their own concepts and concepts on the particularly some denominations, and that i surely have my own. while you are able to come across a submit wherein I corrected somebody on the meaning of a passage, you will no longer come across a unmarried one the place I dissed a denomination of Christianity. temporarily, I 2nd your suggestion that we help one yet another the place we can and save quiet whilst we gained't.

As an atheist, I have full respect for Christians or any other religion
My problem is when those groups start pushing their views on to me
I've made my choice and if I wanted to change I would.
I don't go around promoting atheism to theists and I expect similar treatment from the other side

Actually we can. It just takes individual effort.
1.) Atheist...quit ragging on Christians about their beliefs. Everybody believes something. Just respect that.
2.) Christians...quit damning the Atheists. It's not your place to do that. You have not been given any Divine authority to damn anyone. Contain yourselves and live the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There are many wonderful intelligent Christians that I am fond of. The brainwashed fundies, however, do not deserve respect.

It is totally possible if both sides agree to it and act with respect. Disrespect tends to breed fighting. I have had plenty of good respectful conversations with athiests. I think I have learned from them, and they from me. It's a great way to expand our knowledge of the world. It's all in how we present ourselves and how we respect the other side. But when one side acts up, the other often retaliates. It's just human nature.

I don't offer disrespect based upon religion, political standing, or race- instead. I offer great disrespect to those who decide that THEIR religion, political standing, or race are 100% THE only light and way and they have to tell everyone they know about it or threaten them with consequences if they choose not to change their belief system.

We can. It's okay to challenge another's beliefs, too. Especially something so encompassing as religion. Things become disrespectful when people do not act in a way that deserves respect, such as ignoring logic and science.
