FD & C Red #40 is 99% coal tar derivatives. We don't know of any animal products in it. For years a rumor has claimed that it is made of cochineal or carmine, but that is not true.

it is just a food dye, usually made from vegetative matter, the F D and C stand for Food, Drug and Cosmetic, meaning that it is safe for all food, drug and cosmetic purposes.

FDA certified over 11.5 million pounds of color additives last fiscal year. Of all those colors straight dye FD&C Red No. 40 is by far the most popular.
