My son is becoming alergic to almost all toothpastes! He gets tiny blisters all around his tongue. I used to buy Aquafresh Cavity Protection and that seems to be the only one that he can use,but even it is becoming very hard to find in the stores....anyone else had this happen to them? Have you found an alternative toothpaste to use?

Papain is obtained from the papaya plant. It is included in toothpastes because it has digestive properties (enzyme activity) that can prevent, reduce or break-up plaque build-up around the teeth.
Papain is often a complex mix of many different ingredients (molecules) and some of these are thought to induce allergic reactions in certain, susceptible individuals (like your son).

While I do not know which toothpastes contain papain, my advice would be to read the labels carefully and check with your pharmacist. I would also recommend avoiding special formulations for `tartar-control` or `tooth-whitening` in favor of good old, regular paste formulas which still work well. To insure that he doesn`t run across any hidden papain, another alternative would be to use plain baking soda for brushing.

What about just using baking soda? You may also be able to find some "natural" toothpaste in a health food store that doesn't cause the reactions.

i had the same problem. try biotene i think thats what its called. it is not hard to find most drug stores , superstores have it. my grandmother recommended it it does not foam like normal toothpaste, my grandfather was recommended it when he got cancer. its very gentle. good luck it is a little more expensive than normal toothpastes although.

You go to the health food/vitamin store and find one that doesn't have sodium larauth/laurel sulfate in it. That is very common. I think Biotene may be ok for him too.

talk to his dentist! i know that usually the pastes that have fewer ingredients in them react the least, avoid the ones with added mouthwash, whitenings and so forth (which i'm sure you probably already have). but, in your case, i would talk to his dentist first!
