i am thinking more of how many animals are killed only to be thrown into the rubbish bin and how much forests have been destroyed.

Too much.......a few years ago I worked for BK. If a bun was a little torn or smashed or the smallest little piece was missing.....same with the meat....cracked patties or the smallest pieces missing....they make me throw them away. They wouldn't allow employees to buy them at a discount or even at full price. They wouldn't let me give them to a church or soup line or anything. By the end of a 4-8 hour shift, sometimes we'd have about 1/2 of a trash bag full of untouched food that they'd make us throw away.

Guilty as charged. It is hard to get those leftovers eaten. Seldom enough for the entire family to have a second whole meal. And thats just my house, I know things are worse institutionally.

How much goes to the landfill that could at least feed animals, or compost to feed plants?

What is sad about this is restaurants at the end of the day cannot donate the food to shelters or places that feed the hungry because tax laws wont let the business write it off. But if they throw it in the trash can they can write it off. Go figure. Our own government penalizes business that try to help feed the needy!

Lots, but it's not what you think. You cannot "feed the world with scraps of food." If you brought scraps of food to Africa they'd laugh in your face and tell you to get out. Hunger is not the problem, it's money to buy the food.
