Man Ray actually pre-dated the surrealistic movement. In other words, he was a pioneer and a visionary with his early ventures in surrealistic art, making the early, if not the first, transition from Dada to Surrealism. Other artists followed after him. Most were inspired by him and many copied or 'borrowed' from his trend-setting vision.

Yes, this type of relationship is possible, because I've experienced it. I gave examples below, the brother/sister friend is the first example.
