I have been using it since 2 days. He initially made a mess out of it to remove it. Then he is ok. But even now , immediately after he comes back home after a walk with me, he struggles to ward it off. He stills does nt like it to be on him.
How shud i keep him with the haltie ( gentle leader) ?
Shud i remove it after every walk? Or can i tighten it to keep it on him oermenently till his pulling is stopped completely?

first of all, i LOVE the name Pluto for a great dane, that is so cute! the halti isn't meant to be left on, so you should take it off after walks. gentle leader also makes a harness that stops pulling. it is called the EZ Walk harness, and it works really well! it doesn't go on the face, and my dog doesn't mind wearing his at all. maybe you could try something like that if he doesn't get used to it? heres a link to it:

hope this helps!

Do not keep the halti on when you are not training or walking with him. Do NOT ever yank or pull on a halti/gentle leader.this is especially important with a Dane as serious neck injury could result.
It can take a while for him to get use to it..make sure that every time you put it on and use it that it is a positive experience.

The more he struggles, the more he needs to get used to it. The halti should be removed after a walk, but make sure it is fitted properly. I have a gentle leader and my dog doesn't like it, but she tolerates it. When he starts to associate the halti with walks he won't protest as much.

I also use a Halti with my dog. It will take a while for him to get used to it, but I have found it to be a PRICELESS accessory for my dog. I do not walk him without it. He is a large mix breed, very strong, probably much like your Great Dane. Make sure that you are using the correct size for your dog. It should not be tight around his snout. Walk using a loose leash, making sure that your dog is at least one step behind you at all times. If you feel him start to pull or try to get ahead of you, there are two things you can do.

1. Give him a gentle leash pull correction. If you have ever seen the Dog Whisperer, do what he does.

2. Stop in your tracks every time he pulls or tries to walk in front of you and make him sit. A really easy way to make him sit while wearing the Halti is to gently pull the leash up toward his head so that his mouth closes. Continue pulling up gently, this motion of his head moving backward will make him sit.

You can release him with a command such as "go sniff" when you want to allow him to relieve himself.

At first my Wyatt would actually roll around on the ground and moan and groan and paw at the Halti to try and get me to take it off of him. It is not hurting him I promise you... a lot of dogs make a really big deal about it being on their snout because they are not used to it. In Wyatt's case he also wanted it off because he knew I was in control when I was using it, and at that time I had not yet established dominance with him. Make sure not to make a harsh correction with the leash while the halti is on your dog though... you could cause damage to his neck or spine. Just a gentle pull to the side will get him back in place.

It's up to you if you want to use the Halti permanently or not. As I said, I do not walk my dog without it. Once yours gets used to it, I think you will find that it is a very valuable tool. The Halti and Gentle Leader are two different things though... The Halti clips in two places- once around the back of the head, and once to the collar. The Gentle Leader only clips directly to the leash or collar (I can't remember which), but does not clip around the back of the head. I have tried both tools and strongly prefer the Halti.

You need to give Pluto time top get used to the Halti on his head. I would suggest that you make him sit and place the halti on and reward him for leaving it alone say for 10 minutes at first. Also if you keep it attached to his leash that will help him associate it with walking and going places (be warned though, my 4 yr old Dane still rubs his head up behind me or paws at his face when walking because it itches or something)

I would not suggest leaving it on ornamental, or tightening it, just take baby steps over a few days, and remember, reward, reward, reward!
trust me once he gets used to it he'll love it as much as he loves the sight of his leash.
