Take a cookie sheet and cover it with parchment paper, pour 2 tablespoons of bakers sugar as you would cookies bake at 375 until melted and slightly caramelized (about 4-6minutes depending on your oven) then remove and cool. When you are ready to serve top each Creme with the sugar lid and pop in to the oven for a scant minute to gently warm - viola perfect creme brule and no torch.

place your brulee under the broiler, about 8 inches. Keep a close eye on the brulee so the sugar doesn't burn. My electric oven doesn't get as hot as I would like it to, so 8 servings takes me about 90 seconds. In my mom's gas oven it takes less than 10 seconds

creme brulee is burnt cream in english so,no you can not just sprinkle nutmeg on pudding, you need the crunchy burnt sugar topping edit go buy a 5 buck torch lighter,or a 10 buck propane torch,or in the old days the french chef would pass a glowing red piece of metal over the dessert, lol.

Difficult. If you have a *very* hot grill you can try flashing it under that, and there's an implement called a salamander which is a sort of portable griller ... but if you have to buy a tool to do it, a torch is more practical.
