I'm in the process of repainting my bathroom and have a boarder that has been up for 6 years, I have tried the "dif" border remover and it is not working. any other ways to get the boarder off the wall without damaging the walls?.

i do this for a living.

score the paper with a putty knife.

fill a spray bottle with 25% household vinegar and 75%
HOT water.

spray the border, keep it wet and wait a few minutes. you need to let the solution soak in.

take the putty knife and start stripping.

to get any left over glue residue use the same solution and a nylon net kitchen scrubby.

then use the putty knife to take off the excess glue.

rinse well with warm water.

I just did 4 rooms of this stuff and might I add, I will NEVER put up border OR wallpaper again.

I used the dif and then mixed 1/2 water 1/2 Downey fabric softer into a spray bottle. The secret is to REALLY soak the paper. Remember, most of the time, this will come off in two layers - the first "colored" layer and then the backing. Sometimes you get lucky and it all come's off but most of the time it is seperate.

Also, my son and i created a game - the longest strip of continous paper pulled from the wall wins....as you can tell we were VERY bored and tired of doing this.

Good Luck!

Score the border to allow moisture to penetrate.
Spay a mixture of liquid Downey fabric softener and hot water (50/50 solution). Let it set for 10-15 minutes. Respray a small area and scrape with a putty knife. Just continue in this fashion.

Try to get the vinyl part off the paper backing. If you can do that, soak the brown paper backing with water or wallpaper strip solution from a sprayer and away you go.

If you can't get them to separate, do a drywall mud skimcoat over the border, sand smoothe and prime. Paint away.

Try to peel the outer paper off - but the reason DIF does not allway work - it takes time and repeated soaking! Wet it repeatedly and wait 30-40 minutes....
