So what I am understanding from rbarc is that God did come down from heaven and the Holy Spirit was only there to protect Mary from dying in the presence of the Lord. So why did God come down from heaven was it to have relations or what?

The scriptures say the Holy Ghost. To say that God had relations with Mary to conceive Jesus, degrades both of them. I can't believe Brigham Young once taught that.

We actually do not know the exact manner in which Jesus Christ was conceived. It doesn't matter what the Journal of Discourses says - as that is not part of official canon of scripture. I doubt that Brigham Young had an actual "vision" of what actually happened - it would go against standards of modesty. Regardless of any and all commentary or what you think happened, I believe this, and many, many other Apostles and General Authorities have agreed on this: Mary was a virgin both before and after the conception of Jesus Christ. In fact, Joseph was specifically told not to have marital relations with Mary until after Jesus Christ was born. In the Book of Mormon Mary is referred to as a virgin both before and after the birth of Jesus Christ (See 1 Nephi 11:13-20). I believe the scriptures - both the Bible and the Book of Mormon - when it uses the term "virgin" as literal in that sense. We do not know if God used an advanced form of artificial insemination, and we do not know if it involved actual relations. Again, if you read the Bible and Book of Mormon as a combined set, you will see that Mary had a virgin conception, and a virgin birth. Artificial insemination did not exist in Brigham Young's time, by the way. I would say that the entire process was a miracle one way or the other, and there are other keys on the piano to play besides this one. Have a happy day, and I send you a virtual gummy bear.

As slcbtf says, Brigham youthful is right. Jesus became no longer begotten by using the Holy Ghost. Jesus became begotten by using God the daddy, because of the fact the Bible attests. the theory that the Holy Ghost is the daddy of Jesus Christ is a faux coaching and opposite to the Bible. curiously this fake coaching that the Holy Spirit is the daddy of Jesus Christ comes approximately by using a faux effect of the region of the Holy Spirit.

rbarc is right, the "Spirit of God" is basically the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, which comes from God. The Spirit would not exist, I don't think, without God himself, so Jesus was literally created in the womb through the Spirit of God, and as rbarc pointed out, Mary had to be in such a circumstance to let her be in the presence of God...We believe Jesus Christ is God's only Son in the flesh, meaning God is literally Christ's physical father and spiritual father, as God is only our spiritual father and we all have "physical" fathers...
We do not believe, nor have I ever been taught that God had physical sex with Mary as some people like to claim we believe.
If we needed all the "details" I am sure we would know them.
All we need know is that Christ is God's only Begotten Son.

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
(New Testament | Luke 1:35)

10 And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.
(Book of Mormon | Alma 7:10)

There is no conflict in the doctrine as you may implied.
In the Bible and in the Book of Mormon, there are many incidences where blessing and ordinances are brought to the people of God through the power of the Holy Ghost.

We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Jesus is born of Mary, by God , through the power of the Holy Ghost.

In another word, Jesus is the Son of God, born into the world through the power of the Holy Ghost. Hope that clear up your misconceptions.

God the Father is Jesus' father. Else, how could he be the only begotten of the Father?

The Holy Spirit must attend anytime the God appears to man. If not so, we would not be able to withstand his glory. We would wither away and die. The Spirit is able to buffer that power for God so that is why Mary had to be in the Spirit when it happened.
