There is a lot of confusion about what a parakeet is. Most people in the United States only think of the Budgrigar as a parakeet. Actually any member of the parrot family with a long tail, except macaws, are classified as parakeets. Even relatively large birds, like Indian Ringnecks are considered parakeets.

Besides the parrot, the best bird to keep as a pet is the Cockatiel. They're adorable, can learn to whistle your favorite songs and they are great talkers. They can also learn little tricks and games.
Growing up, I had a Cockatiel named Chico who lived to be 19 years old. It's so cute they way they always are happy to see you and always look like they're smiling.

Are you looking to get your first parrot? Cockatiels are a great starting point for entering the parrot world. They will teach you so much, they're very sweet and very cuddly, and readily learn tricks, and are very social. My son's baby cockatiel has already said her first words. LOL She says "Step up beeby" LOL
