Being in the cycling section I suppose you are interested in cycling as a mean to get fit.
Eat well, that is, little fat, little sugar, lots of veggies and some protein. Just a sensible diet.
Ride your bike as often as you can, but at a pace and in a route you can manage without getting winded. This is the way to start getting your muscles and heart/lungs ready for the new environment.
Slowly increase your distances, or shorten the time in which you do a certain distance.
Then increase the amount of hills you climb. Riding a hill will almost for sure get your heart to work close to a 70% of it capacity or more, so take it in stride.
As you get fitter, you may want to add some speed work( sprints), increasing distance vs time, more hills, etc.
Always try to keep a pedalling rhythm of about 60 to 90 per minute. (In hills much less will be normal).
Stretch when you are done, and consider your rest days as important as the workout days.
Finally; there are many good cycling web pages around and great books easily available. Check them out.

Hi there. I recommend the "eat less exercise more" diet (patent pending, book out soon!). It doesn't matter what the exercise is, as long as you do it regularly and eat a little less food.
Once you are in the groove, it is then a matter of how obsessed you want to be and how far you want to go.
I got a lot of notice at a family party recently for having gotten into half-decent shape again and many were most interested. The interest stopped when I told them I have been swimming every working day and eating a bit less!
Swimming is good but can be problematic, if you have no handy pool. Walking can be done anywhere. Cycling is the best option aside from swimming, but again, you need somewhere safe to do it - most roads are not so safe, motorists being what they are.
Good luck, Steve.

I assum you want to get fit on a bike? You best bet is to join a club, they will give you advice on training, and most clubs have non-racing sections so dont worry about them expecting you to race. You need to ride regulary to benefit from exercise, start with nice steady rides building up the distance as you feel able. Your speed will increase as you get fitter, but dont push to hard or it will hurt and you might put yourself off. Cycling isnt the easiest sport in the world but the benefits from it are great, not only do you get fit but you see things you normally go straight past and also your saving the environment by using pedal power not petrol........Good luck

If You are going to try to get fit by cycling I suggest that you start out slow, just a few miles a day, for a week and gradually increase up to five to ten miles a day, after you reach this goal, in about fourteen more days you should be in pretty good shape. Then to maintain it you should ride at least 20 miles per week.

eat a balanced diet - no junk food, cut back on red meat, and beer or any alcohol, increase fruit, veggie, and water intake.
you have to start exercising also. weather its lifting weights, running, cycling, whatever, anything is better than nothing. if you like doing a particular activity, then you need to research the exercises specific to that activity.
keep a positive outlook and set attainable goals. always tell yourself "i can do it". if you dont, then you could fall and be to depressed to get back up and try again (figureatively speaking). set goals that you know you can attain. once you reach them, you will feel better about yourself. it could be something like "im not going to eat any skittles this week" or "im going to lose 10lbs this month". if you think you can do it, then you will do it.
this is the most important concept in getting fit.
good luck
