Any time you burn an organic compound (this is a compound containing both carbon and hydrogen), the products of the reaction are carbon dioxide and water vapor and the release of energy. Methane is CH4.

The reaction is:

CH4 + 2O2 --> CO2 + 2H2O + energy

That depends upon how methane is produced.
If it is obtained from natural gas deposits, the by-products are those of mining.
If it is obtained from cracking petroleum, the by-products are petrochemicals.
If it is obtained by fermentation, the by-products are those of bacterial culture.
