Neither one has to be chosen for Islam, it was how the successor to Muhammad was chosen, and that isn't needed for conversion to Islam. You might need to chose if you decide to live over there.

May the peace, blessings and mercy of God be upon you

You must firstly read and understand this hadith.

[006:159] Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad [Peace Be Upon Him]) have no concern with them in the least. Their affair is only with God, Who then will tell them what they used to do.

V.6:159) It is said that the Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] recited this Verse and said: "These people are those who invent new things (Bid'ah) in religion and the followers of the vain desires of this Muslim nation, and their repentance will not be accepted by God." (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi)
[It has been narrated in the Hadîth Books (At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Mâjah and Abu Dâwûd) that the Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] said: "The Jews and the Christians will be divided into seventy-one or seventy-two religious sects and this nation will be divided into seventy-three religious sects, all in Hell, except one, and that one is: on which I and my Companions are today, i.e. following the Qur'ân and the Prophet's Sunnah (legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements)."]

So you can see the Prophet predicted well in advance the rise of sects, now I suggest you come to Islam and follow the Qu'ran AND Sunnah. This is what I try my best to do. And this is the proper way, we shouldn't call our selves Sunni, rather we are Muslims (Submitters to God) and this is the proper method. The Prophet and his companions never called themselves Sunni, they were Muslims.

The Shia have innovated (they changed the basic Shahadah [pronouncement of faith]) for God will judge them.

So please, if you come to Islam, which I hope God will make easy for you, study the Qu'ran and Sunnah.

La illaha iallah Muhammadur Rasulallah

There is no deity worthy of besides God and Muhammad was his messenger

If you truly believe this in your heart, you are a Muslim. But I suggest you go to closest Masjid and ask the Imam to help you out.

Peace Be With You

When I converted to Islam, I went into neither of these groups. There is supposed to be no division of sects within Islam. There are only Muslims. The Sunni and Shi'a represent two different political factions within Islam. The split is not for religious reasons.

Muslims are still a united religion. As such they aren't supposed to be either. when you study some more and realize what it is you want you may chose to be Sunni, Shia, or some other branch instead.

well both are roots of islam, just very brief differences..Saddam Hussein was the leader of the Sunni Muslims and oppressed the Shia Muslims for years, although Shia Muslims make up more of the population.

Prophet Muhammed(PBUH*) ordered Muslims not to divide themselves into sects like Christians and Jews. So don't pick a sect. Just be a Muslim. That's what I am.

Well, when you converted to Islam, what beliefs were your reason for converting? Study things some more for yourself and then make the choice.

Praise be to Allah.

Because Islam was revealed to prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him), so he was the most one practising Islam perfectly.
so my answer is: to the group which the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) and his companion were in.
