It seems to be the only way it can survive. Complying with international law would mean it having to face its crimes.

Well Israel survived 60 years acting above international law...But ,now things are not like 60 years ago.Although Israel keeps reminding us about the Holocaust, people don't feel guilty anymore for that.Sure it was an awful fact, but it happened 60 years ago...And the fact the Israel is "defending itself"...after what happened last summer in Gaza and Lebanon there are less people who believe that...But they still have the support of the only super power in the world:US...Sure US is loosing its credibility and also it's statute of the only superpower,so I don't know how long US will be able to protect Israel...
So I don't know how long Israel will survive if it continues to act above international law,but I don't think forever...

Israel has the skill, determination and guts to eviscerate any nation other than the big five (US,UK,Russia, China, France) that causes it the slightest annoyance.
Israel is not acting outside of International Law - she occupies no territory that is not hers by right. Arab states have tried to demolish Israel sinve her inception in 1948 and none have succeeded.
Israel could, in one air strike, take out the capabilities of Syria and Iran and reduce these states to conditions approaching the stone age.
Israel wants a bit of the Mediterranian littoral that she can call her own - a secure homeland for the Jews. She has not compromised the religious sites of the Moslems, to whom Jerusalem is an holy city. If Arab states recognise Israel, and her right to exist, then there will be no threat to world peace from Israel. Israel, so far, has endured four major conflicts in 59 years - can one wonder that she is a prickly State.

A lot longer than it will survive if it allows the Arabs to dictate in the UN as to what it should do.... Personally, I think Israel has a habit of not finishing its wars. Had it even once totally clobbered its enemies, they would not keep coming back to attack it again...

what is all this talk of "international law"?the only outfit that can enforce it might be the UN but they are so inept that they are worthless.
no one can enforce it.it's only by consent can any country be punished for violation.
sanctions are a lot of baloney as proven by iraq and soon iran and n.korea.
