You can keep with the theme of the night by bringing some Mexican Beer (Dos Equis or Modelo Especial) or by bringing a small cactus instead of flowers. If the cactus does not fit with their home decor, they can always display it at work.

When invited for dinner I usually ask if I should bring something, as in something for dinner. I wouldn't bring food or drinks for that specific meal spontaneously; while some people love that kinda thing, others would consider it insulting, as if you're afraid they won't provide enough. Flowers are usually good, but chocolate or wine are very nice gifts too, especially when gift-wrapped it's normally accepted they're for the host to use later. If they want to open them up right away that's cool but few if any will take those gifts as a 'necessary' addon to their meal.

If this be casual or you are not made of money bring a big jug of lemon tea (a beverage that goes with everything). Some after supper spearmint candies in a nice decorated tin (breath, desert)
And I'm sure they won't mind/ would like any of the above And include a big bag of tortilla chips. Thats enough if casual or nice since maybe someone should not have alcohol or not able.

You could take a floral centerpiece, or you could take a nice dessert. Taking something along as a hostess gift is always a kind gesture. I would have said a nice bottle of wine, however the wife is pregnant. Enjoy your dinner & company. God bless****

I usually ask to bring something. If they decline my offer, I usually bring a bottle of wine at a hostess gift. It's up to you to bring something. When I invite people over, I usually tell them just to bring themselves. I don't mind if they come empty handed, they are my guests. I invited them and they shouldn't feel obligated to bring anything. But, if they do bring something I'm usually surprised and grateful.

I've always found that a small appetizer tray, maybe with veggies or something, or a dessert always goes over well. Something universally liked and not to pricey. Some wine or beer works too, or if she's into that kind a thing, a nice scented candle.

If you decide to bring something, it should be an item that would not be part of the regular meal, but can supplment. Such as a drink or a dessert. If the host does not wish to serve it with the meal, it can be snacked on later.
If uncertain, ask....

A bottle of medium priced red wine would be appropriate, assuming the host isn't a non drinker. Also assuming your fiance's friend is male...flowers would not be appropriate.

Flowers or wine if they drink wine. Best to ask them if they want you to bring salad or wine or dessert.
