After hearing all the Marines have to offer, my boyfriend joined. It was at a time when he was confused as to what he wanted. Anyhow, all I've been hearing and have knowledge directly about, is how the benefits afterward aren't worth much. That only the vet can use them, there are LONG waits to see a vet doctor or be admited to a vet hospital. In addition, the schooling doesn't count as much toward college credit and you could get more grants as a civilian than the GI bill. Also, if you get a GI bill you cannot qualify for any other school loans/grants. Via his letters he feels he got a snow job. Can anyone give some information.

What you have heard is wrong:
The benefits are great...free Medical and Dental...you use Military DRs...VA is for Veterans only
The military pays for all of your college while you are Active Duty...I got my BS while in Active Duty...
You get your GI Bill no matter what..it is separate from grants...you will have to pay $1200 to get into it and they give you like 40K for school when you get out...I am getting $1098 right now for my Masters a month...
Whoever has told you this is a liar...the Military has great Benefits...plus you you are married they give you free housing or money to pay rent...and money for food each month...

The GI Bill is not tuition money as such. You can finance college using a host of other grants. The GI bill pays you money per month while you are in school. You can use it however you wish with no restictions other than being in school and make passing grades. In other words you could use it to pay rent, pay a car loan, etc. I had no problem using the GI bill with other grants and loans.
Military credits were good for getting rid of useless required classes like physical fitness and other stupid electives.
As for a VA doctor I personally never use them as I have my own insurance. If he is war wounded he goes to the top of the list for medical treatment.
Other benefits:
VA Home loan guarentee: Very good. No money down home loans.
Veterans preference for war vets (extra six points on the civil service exam.)

He's already in, you can't buy him out or anything like that. You've been hearing garbage. Who have you been listening to? War protesters?
Medical care is fine. Base doctors treat the Marine and his spouse and children, but they can go to an off base doctor if they choose, but you have to pay for health insurance to do that.
Education benefits are excellent, most bases have classrooms where he can take classes, plus his training counts for some college credit. He can take CLEP tests for free. GI Bill can be used in conjunction with other financial aid. If he stays single and is really smart, he might get nominated for the Naval Academy, but that's a longshot.
Be proud of your bf for doing something important and support him.

The GI bill paid for my college education. I don't know where you are getting this conflicting information. I had the GI bill and the Army college fund and I didn't need anymore loans/grants, so I don't know about that, and it doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like BS from a typical anti-military person who doesn't know his rear end from a hole in the ground.

Here's one thing to consider: There is a difference between being a vet and being a retiree. My sis's DH is a vet. He served his one term and got out. He can see a Veteran's Administration doctor at a VA facility but she has no benefits from his service.
The plan right now is for my DH to be a vet because he served and a retiree because he served 20+ years. We both have benefits from him serving and will both be able to continue with them once he retires.

I received alot of grant money on top of my GI Bill, the GI Bill didn't disqualify me from anything. Don't know about the other benefits I've only used my GI Bill.

Tell him to suck it up and grow a set. He knew what the military is and he knew perfectly well there's a war going on. He made his bed now it's time to lay in it. And tell him to pay his own way in life instead of suckling at the government teet like a pathetic leech. It's called having pride.

You boyfriend should have been smarted than that. This is something you research and decide if its something your truely want to do. Marines do not need to out there with others that joined for the wrong reason.

You boy fiend is an adult and should have known what he was doing as an adult. I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate his girl friend trying to help him weasel out of it. NO ONE joins the marines these days totally ignorant of what a marines life is like.
