Patellar luxation is an inherited disorder, so please have your dog fixed if it is not already.

The knee cap (patella) normally fits into a groove in the thigh bone (femur). The patella slides up and down in this groove as the leg bends and straightens. Patellar luxation means that the knee cap has slipped out of the groove. There are several reasons why this happens, including malformation of the groove. Luxation may happen only occasionally, or may happen continuously. The knee cap may pop back into the groove on its own, or your veterinarian may need to push it back into place. Your dog will be lame when the patella is out of place. Over time your dog may develop other degenerative joint changes, such as osteoarthritis.

It is a genetic problem that the dog will unfortunately be stuck with for the rest of his life. The dogs knee caps may pop out of place causing him pain. My chihuahua has the same problem. I was told that it may never actually bother them, but it is possible that it will. Mine has had problems once were he was limping around because it was hurting. I brought him to the vet and they gave him an anit-inflamatory and told me to bring him to a surgeon if it didn't get better. Well we brought him to a surgeon, but by the time I got the appointment he was feeling better so we just had them look at him and they said it is still possible he won't have any problems in the future, it is something he can live with, but if we chose for him to have surgery it was going to cost $3000 for both legs.

Avoid letting the dog jump off of anything (couch, bed, out of the car, ect) when possible, I read that it can cause arthritis when the dog gets older, so not letting them jump off things is recommended. That of course is easier said than done.
