If you have Windows XP, you do not need to download anything. Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > choose the Languages tab, and then select Details and Add. You will have a whole set of options including Taiwanese and PRC Chinese. Pick PRC Chinese. After you do that, on your Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, you should see a small green square that probably says "EN" for English. Click on it, and you will have the option to select Chinese (PRC). Once you've done that, you can start typing in pinyin, and you will get Chinese characters.
