Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence. In fact a Luggage theft ring was recently busted in the Atlanta Airport. I doubt you'll have any luck getting the airline to compensate you. But good luck. In the future be sure to put a large highly visible marker (such as a luggage strap in a recognizable color) on our luggage so that you may identify it at a distance.

I have flown for quite a few years with never any problems with luggage until last year "Birmingham" air port I waited like a tw** at the carousel, you car'nt believe your case will not come through, in the end I reported it missing, took forever. Two days later on a Sunday night at eight o'clock it was delivered to my door, I was goobsmacked.I live in Nottingham and came from Birmingham. The sad thing about your case is that some one had deliberately stolen it and yes more should be done to protect our property, the airlines take enough money off us for the fares.

I had some fool take my bag, I figured out who, because a bag vaguely similar to mine was the only one left on the carousel. I took the bag in to report my bag missing and gave them the one I found and said, "This is the guy". It was and the fool wouldn't bring it back, the airline had to go get it from him.
I recommend getting luggage that's not to expensive, thieves will know that with a nice bag, nice things will be inside. Then mark you bag with a colored ribbon or some marking so that some fool won't think that it's his and take it.
The airlines used to have someone checking the luggage before you could leave the carousel area, but they are cutting back on everything these days.
I hope you get it back.

did you report this straight away ? if you get in touch with the airline, they may have some information for you ?
Somone took my bag off the carousel last time I went away, thank goodness they were stading where they were because I saw my bag next to this lady as soon as I got through passport control. I've been having a few nightmares since, I can imagine how upsetting it is for you.
Hopefully if you have reported it they could perhaps do something about it, and pray that the person who took your case has made a genuine mistake and will report it themselves.
I wish you the best of luck.

No, but I've alwasy thought thiefs could get away with your luggage at the carousel. I'm sure its quite common and I would raise the issue with WatchDog etc. if I were you. However, I doubt the international carousel system will change. (But you could make a petition in order for there to be more stringent luggage checks in the UK to prevent this kind of event happening at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk or something like that, because it is time things changed.)

This happens at airports without security. Some airports (for example, Los Angeles) already have people at the door checking your tags (you need to show claim ticket). If enough people report theft at a certain airport, that may prompt the airport to improve security. You should just report the bag as lost by the airline, instead of stolen from the airport.
It's so easy for thieves to do this because if you catch the guy taking your bag, he'll just say "oops, sorry, I thought it was mine". And then nothing happens to him.

In most Russian airports, they won't allow you to take luggage out of the building unless you can show the baggage receipt that matches the airlines tag on the suitcase. Not a bad system, but of course it needs staff to operate it, and staff cost money.

I had my luggage rack/stroller I guess you call it stolen. I too saw it happen and thought the same. Must be two on here. That was 25 year ago. Taught me a lesson. I am always standing where the luggage comes out first now and aggressive. At the time I had a baby in tow and didn't want any one to snag him.

One to blame is the security. They are suppose to check each luggage taken by passenger from carousel if luggage tag correspond to their plane ticket luggage tag.

my elderly aunt came to visit me in spain, she had tied a red ribbon round the handle of a black suitcase. After picking her up from malaga airport, asked her if she needed help in unpacking. You should have seen her face when she pulled out skimpy thongs, mini skirts and about a hundred condoms!!!!! I would haveloved to have seen the face of the young girl who picked up my aunts case, !!!!!!! oh by the way we took the case back to the airport, but my aunt has never seen her case to this day........
