"Sticky Paws" transparent strips. They come in two different sizes, and stick everywhere.
It has worked on my sofa and on my bedroom door.
Cats just don't like the sticky feeling and learn quickly.
Harmless for furniture and cat.

Do not use anything acid as mentioned above: you'll get discoloration or holes in your furniture!

Sorry people but foil won't work, cats love playing with foil balls. Fabreeze doens't work either, people use it on the furniture to freshen it all the time so they are used to the smell. Sure they don't like citrus when you shove it in their faces, but on the furniture it doesn't work. How do I know.. cause my male cat wasn't affected by anything I tried, not even FOOEY, which I bought from the vet. It tastes HORRIBLE but does nothgin for scratching. What I ended up doing is putting blue duct tape on the places where he was scratching... and he stopped. Wish I knew that before he destroyed my couch.... oh well, I love him anyways!!!

I also got 2 different scratch posts. he won't use then but my other 2 cats do. He now uses the little carpet I have in front of the balcony door. So try that, give him his own little carpet and a scratch post.

You could just buy your cat a scratching post and praise your cat when they use it. I also heard that cats don't like the smell of citrus fruits, so you could try a Frebreeze spray or something on the furniture. Good luck with your cat!

I have found the "Sticky Paws" double-sided strips to be the best way to keep cats from using the furniture for scratching. They are not terribly unsightly and when the cat is trained to use his post they can be removed from the furniture. They also work on woodwork, table legs, door frames, etc.

A good post is essential as they need to "manicure" their nails and remove the old sheaths from their nails.

Orange or lemon oil for wood furniture, or put lemons or orange (you have to see which your cat dislikes most) in a cloth on the sofa. Cats don't like citrus smells. You could also try getting one of those scratching pads you can hang on a doorknob (they can be removed quickly when company comes) and put catnip on it to encourage the cat to scratch somewhere else.

Get a small plant sprayer and set it to mist mode, when it scratches, spray it, it's harmless to the cat but they hate it, it worked for me, give it a go! It'll save spraying ya furniture with all sorts of chemicals that dont work anyway.

Citrus oil, lemon or orange--they hate it. You can buy it or just rub the coloured side of the peel on your furniture. Cats really hate the smell of citrus!
If your cat doesn't show interest in a scratching post, get him a piece of natural wood with the bark on--like a piece of treebranch, thick enough he can sink his claws into it without dragging it around. My cat used to sharpen his claws on the bottom (wooden) step of our stepladder.

You can put double faced sticky tape on, or you can try aluminum foil. Also try putting a cat scratcher in front of the furniture where the cat scratches, and try to encourage them to use the scratcher.
