Despite all the previous answers talking about taking echinacea, "Airborne", vitamin C, Zinc, etc, there are a few very simple facts.
1. The only drug with ANY evidence of helping a cold is Zinc (ingredient in Cold-Eeze). There is no evidence (and in fact some evidence of no effect) for echinacea, vitamin C, and Airborne.
2. The best thing to do is stay warm, hydrated, and well-rested. Taking it easy early on can reduce problems later.
3. Once you "feel it coming," the virus has already infected your nasal passages and throat for a day or so, so you've already "caught" the cold.
4. Wash your hands! Cold viruses can survive on surfaces outside the body. Touching your nose or mouth with a contaminated hand is one of the major ways colds are spread.

Keep your hands clean
Drink lots of water to be sure you are not dehydrated, which worsens symptoms
Take a Cold Eeze (you can buy in pharamacy) as soon as you feel any cold symptoms (it will help your cold go away even as quick as a day)
Keep yourself warm to strengthen your ability to fight off the cold
You can also take Vitamin C

I take a couple of droppers full of echinacea, by that afternoon... all symptoms are gone. Sometimes I followup with a second dose to be sure. This might sound strange, but it is like I can feel it working. You might have to experiment, there are several blends of echinacea, some with red root, some with goldenseal. Everyone's body chemistry is different so check it out!
