It depends which ones you're taking. Sertraline takes about three weeks to kick in. I didn't really notice that they'd started to work - one day I realised I didn't feel depressed anymore, so I knew they were.

You really need to speak to your GP or counsellor about it. It's hard to even give you a link to information without knowing which medication you take.

Good luck hon, keep smiling. xxx

It's different for everyone. Some take a day or two; others may take up to two to three weeks. Ya' just gotta hang in there and give it a chance!!! It will be such a blessing to your life if it does work, but sometimes you have to try different combos until you finally get the right one. It is well worth it in the long run...like getting out of a self-imposed prison!!! Believe I know, I've had bipolar & anxiety disorder my whole life, esp. the last 25 years! Praise the Lord for the new medications on the market!!
Good Luck!

I had gentle postpartum melancholy and took them some weeks after giving delivery (in previous due August) till the spring time (March/April). My healthcare professional reported that's even as human beings quite get depressed because days are a lot shorter and dreary climate. My husband said a change after about 5 days and that i became not crying anymore and intensely positive. My mom ought to tell the change in my voice turned right into a lot happier than earlier. My healthcare professional placed me on Zoloft and it worked tremendous (i'd decrease the tablet into quarters, it did not take a lot).

I started off taking Prozac and I just started feeling like getting up in the morning like 10 days after I had started taking the medication and like 2 weeks after I had started people noticed that I had changed in a more positive way. So it was a real good thing. I have had to go through different meds and have them combine different ones over the years but I believe in them. I tried to stop taking them and I just go back to being miserable in 3 months without noticing it. Others notice for me! I need meds and they work for me! Be patient time and Dr.s help will work for you if they put you on meds they will find the right one for you.

Depends on the anti-depressant you take but most of them start to noticeably start to work after 2-3 weeks and fully after 6 weeks. The side affects vary between people and the type of anti-depressant you are taking. I had to go through several different kinds to find the one that was best for me and the least amount of side effects. Which ended up being Zoloft. My doctor started me out on 50 mil. and now he just moved me up to 150 mil. a day. Hate having to depend on these kind of medications but without them I am very unhappy. When the medicine starts to work, it is so subtle, you may not notice a difference. Only when you catch yourself laughing and smiling at the day will you finally say, "Hey, I think my medicine is finally working!!" Good-luck and remember sunnier days are ahead!

Some of the drugs that other posters have mentioned have no impact on depression, infact some are only vitamins, My advice to you is think of one thing that you want more than anything and focus on that, then go full steam ahead to get it. don’t worry if you feel you cant, try again tomorrow it will always be there, drugs/alchahol only slow down the life that you don’t have, or the want's in life, but I can assure you they are there, and I know you don’t feel like they are but I can promise you they are
If the drugs work go for it, they will take your mind of the problems you have in the short term or until you get over a certain prob.
they are not a cure YOU are the cure

Most take several weeks for you to notice the full affects.
One day you'll just notice Hey I'm really doing and felling better! Just give the medication time.I heard myself singing! I said out loud "I'm happy again!"I was really happy. It took several different medications for me as I was given the diagnosis of major depression...it is a little harder to medicate than say seasonal or situational depression.I wish you love and happiness. It will come I promise you.

I've been on Lexapro for 4 weeks. I feel better than I did 4 weeks ago, but still have a long way to go. The doc told me to hang on for 6-8 weeks.

Antidepressants as a general rule start to work at about the three week mark. You feel more optimistic; look forward to doing things. Be patient - it will happen.
