I adopted three kittens (which grew up as ferals). The mother cat gave birth to them in our porch. These cats look out for each other. They wait for each other before eating. They protect each other and clean each other. When they were young, one of the cats got stuck in a cement block while playing. After hearing cries of distress, one of the other cats examined the situation, and came over to help. After some quick thinking, he went around the back of the block, pushed his sister out from behind, then pulled her out from the front, by the nape of her neck. Afterwards, he licked her face and kissed her, while the other cat looked on. Since we adopted them the mother had two kittens. The father cat always waits for the others to eat, before eating, and watches over the kittens and their mother, while they're eating and playing. Is this unusual cat behavior, or do all cats do this?

Wow how lovely to read your question, I wouldn't worry about it, I think its quite natural for them to look out for each others, they are a family just like humans that's all. Enjoy them cause you wouldn't see this too often, its really wonderful.

This sounds like an ideal situation to me. I have three female cats. They're not related but one is 7 years old and the others are only 11-15 months. The older cat looks after the little ones. She steps back if they come near the food dish allowing them to eat first even though she's hungry. When my friend's dog comes to play (the dog gets along so well with my youngest cat-they love each other), my oldest cat sits under the dining room table and watches them like a hawk. Once, she took a dive at the dog when she thought the dog was trying to hurt the kitten (they were only playing chasing games with each other). I was completely taken by surprise. I guess older cats are protective of younger ones even if they're not related.

This is pretty normal, cats are very protective of their family "units", which can include people. Some breeds are better at it than others. You have yourself some very family oriented cats, I would hang on to them. These type always make life more tolerable.

Just as a lion pack does the same thing, your babies are a complete family unit and in this big kitty world they can watch out for each other

Normal behavior.
They sound so adorable!
This should show people that cats are smarter than they think.
