For starters they have a companion book to the bible that is just as important to them, it is called "The book of Mormon" It isn't that they don't drink coffee but do drink soda, it's that they don't drink anything with caffeine in it, if you watch you will see all the soda they drink is decaffeinated. They also do not drink any alcohol, they will not use and medication that isn't absolutely necessary (IE medication to improve your skin). They will not go to an "R" rated movie only PG...etc one branch of my family is Mormon, hope this helps :)

Someone has already mentioned the Word of Wisdom given by revelation to Joseph Smith, which included "hot drinks." When I was a missionary I had a companion who explained how there was tannin or tannic acid in the coffee bean, which if you constantly expose it to your stomach can irritate the lining. She pointed out that tannin is what people use to tan leather hides, and who would want that in your stomach? The caffeine in large quantities in any thing you eat or drink has a tendency to create an artificially elevated energy (obviously ) but it can also create heart problems. Now I have on occasion drunk caffeinated sodas, but lately I have given up on them altogether for health reasons. I think there was a show on recently which said that if you are going to drink soda/pop, drink it fast, and then brush your teeth afterwards. The Word of Wisdom is the minimum set of standards to adhere to, and since you are also supposed to emphasize fruits and vegetables and whole grains, that is where more in-depth study comes in. Remember there is a whole range of Mormons just like any other people, and the more we study principles of health, the more we will (hopefully) choose to eat things that help us concentrate better and be open to inspiration from God. Have a happy day, and I send you a gummy bear (because a virtual one won't hurt you).

Coffee, if the beans don't have too much pesticides, is good to drink. Decafenated coffee also. If it doesn't have the pesticides or processing chemicals.
Mormons also believe sodas are bad for you, so say not to drink them either. But I have heard they have the stock in Coca Cola sodas, so would like you to drink those pops.
Me, I drink coffee. Usually choose organic and try to blend decaf, so I can drink a lot of coffee. Also, it has antioxidants and helps prevent cancer.
I get stomach ulcers when I drink coke regularily.

We don't drink coffee because we are commanded not to - it is contained in the Word of Wisdom, a revealtion given to Joseph Smith as what we could call a "health guideline"...it is found in the 89th section of the Doctrine & Covenants...it basically prohibits coffee, tea, tobacco, strong drinks (alcohol) and hot drinks..and it also talks about how fruits, herbs, meat, and grains are good for us and how everything good should be used in moderation.
I know a lot of people who don't drink pop or caffine and I know a lot who do. We have been counseled by the prophet to use our best judgement for those types of things...maybe one day there will be a new revealtion that states all carbonation is bad or just caffine or whatever. Who knows. For now, I drink very little pop - a Sprite now and then, my husband drinks 2 cokes a day. We both worthily hold temple recommends.

It is not the caffeine. See D&C 89, the Word of Wisdom. Coffee is a hot drink with dangerous chemicals, not like soda, which while not good for your health, is not going to harm you if you are smart and moderate about what kinds and how much you drink. It is not in the bible.

It has to do with what we consider to be a modern-day revelation called "the word of wisdom"
When I was an LDS missionary, we taught it involved abstaining from:
drugs (proper use of prescriptions and over-the-counter being an obvious exception).
alcohol
tobacco products
coffee
black tea.
Soda isn't directly mentioned. Many LDS people also choose not to consume caffeinated sodas, but that's left to our own personal discernment.
Anyway there's more to it about general health, you know, eating grains, and healthy foods etc. And there's more spiritual reasoning behind it, but that's the basics.

The thing is the caffeine, not the coffee.
"No" to Biblical support. Dietary laws in the Bible are outlined in Leviticus and have to do with clean and unclean animals, birds and the use of yeast at passover.
There must be some other interpretation of the New Testament that they use, since they pretty much bastardize and rewrite the Old Testament.

Sodas are banned too...anything with caffeine, a drug. They are right. Caffeine is a drug. But the real truth is anything you are for or against you can justify it somehow in the bible. It is very open to interpretation. That is why there are so many denominations in this world,

I actually know quite a bit about mormans..because my brother's girlfriend of 2 years is a morman, and she and I are pretty close. We've discussed this issue before, and she told me that they aren't supposed to drink anything with caffeine..No matter if it is Coffee, Soft drink, or anything else of the sort because the view it as a drug..It's kind of ridiculous..but it's their beliefs.

A Mormon co-worker of mine told me that it's the coffee bean in particular, not that they necessarily avoid caffeine or "unhealthy drinks". But then I've heard others say that it comes from a quote from Joseph Smith advising against hot drinks.
