I'm dedicated to starting a vigorous workout regimen beginning tomorrow. I figured that I'm about 20 ~ 25 pounds overweight (6 feet tall, about 190 lbs, I'm shooting for getting down to 170). I did a little research and found out that cardio workouts are the way to burn fat (as opposed to weight lifting). So what's the most efficient cardio workout out there (what'll give me the most "band for my buck" so to speak). I have access to a gym that has just about everything (treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, stair steppers) so does anyone have any suggestions as to what's best? I'm basically looking to lose as much fat as possible in as little time as possible. Thanks!!

Any cardio is good cardio. Using all of those machines, walking, and running will all lead you to your results. Its best to work in your target heart rate zone which is going to burn you the most fat no matter what kind of cardio you are doing. To find this simply subtract your age from 220. Don't stick to one form of cardio because not only will you get bored, your body will adapt to it in about 2 weeks and you will no longer see any changes. Its also good to interval train meaning varying the speed and intensities during your workout. For example if you are on the treadmill walk for 5 minutes then run for 2 minutes then walk for 5 again. Also don't count out weight training completely. Muscle burns more calories than fat in the long run so the more muscle you have, the higher your metablism will be. Its best to weight train 2-3 times a week with a day of rest in between. I would reccomend asking a worker at your gym for help with weight training so that you use proper form and technique and don't hurt yourself. Also make sure you are eating and try to choose healthier foods. You will need to replenish your body especially after hard workouts. Remember the only way you are going to lose weight and body fat is to consume less calories than you are using but too few calories will slow your metabolism down. Good luck!

I'm right there with ya. About the same height but tip the scales at 200 lbs. I wanna get down to 180 by May. I joined the Y and have been going 3 - 4 times a week with a heavy concentration on the elliptical (I'm not a big runner, but I find I can work up a good sweat and not feel too much of a burn after about 45 minutes on one of these things). I'm also going to join the spin class as well. I heard it's a great cardio workout and will help lose weight fast. Don't forget to EAT WELL too! I have cut down on all of the fast food stuff (don't even think about that shake at Mickey D's). Lots of salads with canned chicken for lunch (it;s good! Try it!), and a reasonable dinner. I just don't pig out like I used to when I got home from work. I'm on pace to hit my goal after losing 4 pounds in 2 weeks. Again, nothing too extreme, but for me, it's going to make a difference.

Walking is the best exercise to lose weight. Use on of the new step treadmills and do 50 minutes three times a week. And walk about the neighborhood or up stairs at work, too. If you have the option, try walking in a pool which gives restistance of the water and cardio workout while walking and reduces the stress/impact on the back, knees and feet.

It is advisable not to lose too much weight at one time, e.g., one or two pounds a week. Slower loss means loss of fat not supports to vital organs.

190lbs. is not bad for 6 foot. I'm assuming you have a high bodyfat%.

Do a search for "high intensity interval training".

Basically you alternate between an all out pace and a moderate pace. On the treadmill, you alternate lets say 1 minute at 10 mph and then 1 minute at 6 mph and keep repeating this process for a good 15-20 minutes.

You should be striving to be reaching your heart rate maxmimum on the all out minutes.

Cooldown for 10 minutes.
